Advantages: Soothed my throat, stopped the tickling, were only 59p

Disadvantages: Soothing doesn't last very long.

Having spend half the night awake with a sore throat and barely being able to swallow, I decided to get some Soothers throat sweets this morning. Popping into Spar, I could only find blackcurrant or cherry flavoured Soothers, so settled for Honey & Lemon flavour Lockets. Honey & Lemon isn't a favourite flavour of mine, but it's better than cherry or blackcurrant. I've never really gone for the Lockets brand, but they'd got the nicest flavour out of what was available in the shop.

Lockets are medicated lozenges to help sooth your throat and clear your nose. There are 10 lozenges in a pack and each lozenge is wrapped separately.

As soon as I got them out of the shop I unwrapped one and popped it in my mouth. I could feel the effect of the menthol and eucalyptus pretty quickly and I would say that they definitely taste of real honey and lemon. I didn't have a blocked nose, but often you can feel it being cleared anyway, but I didn't feel these lozenges affected my nose at all (not like some I've had). However, I could feel my throat being soothed as I was sucking the sweet, so they work pretty quickly in that respect. There's a "soothing liquid centre" to these Lockets and it tasted the same as the rest of the lozenge and did help soothe my throat a little more.

So the Lockets soothed my throat while I was eating one, but did that soothing continue? Not really. I noticed that it had started to wear off after 10 minutes or so. I guess that's when I should have popped another in my mouth, but I'd only bought one packet and didn't want to waste them... That and you've got to be careful not to overdose on these things.

I was thinking that this pack of 10 should last be around 24 hours and that was probably the recommended dosage over that period. Looking at the back of the pack, it turns out I was wrong... In any 24 hours adults & children over 12 should not exceed 3 packs. THREE?! I would have thought that was quite a lot in 24 hours! Children between 7 - 12 should not exceed 2 packs, and children between 3 - 6 should not exceed 1 pack in 24 hours.

These Lockets contain 4.1g total sugars per lozenge and should not be used by those with a sugar intolerance, however the packet reports that there have been no reported side effects for those who are pregnant.

I paid 59p for a pack of Lockets from Spar, which (considering the price of sweets these days) I thought was a fair price.

Would I consider buying these again? For a quick (though short lived) fix to a tickley or sore throat... yes!

Summary: An OK medicated lozenge.
