Advantages: unblocks noses
Disadvantages: strong smell lingers
I'm sick of these changes in the weather lately, one day it will be sunny enough to go out in a T-shirt and the next morning there will be frost on the ground. All of these changes in weather mean that I have had constant colds.
One morning last week I ended up in Tesco to stock up on supplies to get me through a long day. Into my basket went some painkillers, throat sweets and cough mixture but I avoided the decongestents as my GP has tried to get me to stop taking them for my recurrent sinus infections as they can cause more problems long term.
I decided to try the olbas tissues for their decongestant properties but wasn't really expecting too much from them. They cost me £1.49 for a pack of six pocket packs in Tesco last week around the same price as other branded tissues.
Upon opening the pack you are immediately greeted with the strong smell of olbas oil which contains a mix of menthol, eucalyptas, cajuput and juniper berry oils. To use the tissues you scrunch them up in your hand to release the oils and then use them to blow your nose.
These are surprisingly effective, they worked better than I imagined they would. You can feel the oils warming up your nasal passages and then feel them unblock. I like the fact that it has this effect without taking pills.
What I dont like about them is the fact the smell is so strong and it lingers for hours afterwards. Make sure you dont rub your eyes after touching one of these tissues or you will be in agony.
I've no idea how long these have been sold for but the novelty of them meant that I lost two packets in hours. I gave one pack to a friend who wanted to try them after seeing them in my car and my sister stole another pack later. I've hidden the rest of my packs so I can keep the rest for myself.
These are good if you want to use a decongestant but want to avoid taking pills. Surprisingly effective but the lingering smell on your hands may put you off using them.
Summary: good for unblocking noses without pills

- 19/09/08 Your Gp was right about the decongestants - too much use can lead to rebound congestion! Ive got a cold & sore throat at the moment so will give these a bash when i do my shopping this afternoon |
