I use several different products to try beat my rosacea. For anyone the condition isn't nice, but as a woman in my early 30s I really despise having horrible skin flare ups which are difficult to hide and can really affect my confidence and mood! Because I use several products in conjunction with one another, it is often difficult to pinpoint what is working best. With the advice of beauticians and my own research, I've found that for example anything with rose in it is soothing on the skin, while Dermalogica anti redness is a life saver. There are times however when stress plays a huge part in my skin condition, I can go to sleep with lovely skin and wake up with red cheeks and several angry flare ups. These are just plain not nice, and I suffered from this last week. We are currently in the process of buying a new build house, and both myself and my husband have been incredibly stressed. He just doesn't eat, I get spots, what a pair! When these flare ups happen, I need a quick fix to repair the skin and this is when light therapy comes in.
I first heard about light therapy from my beautician of all people. When my doctor first diagnosed me with rosacea (I say diagnosed, I actually told him I thought I had it and he agreed!), he was rather unhelpful actually and aside from wanting to throw medication at me, offered little advice in what often proves to be a long-term problem. After doing a little of my own research I found a beautician specialising in problem skin, and she suggested investing in an 'at home' light therapy unit. With her advice, I looked into it straight away, and although there are other products on the market, it seemed that Lumie was the marker leader. At around £150 it's not the cheapest solution out there, however I have quickly come to realise that problem skin is big money and if you want a product that works you have to pay for it.
Lumie Clear is basically a large handheld compact with LED lights. Light Therapy has been proven to treat acne using blue light to attack the bacteria and red light to sooth and heal the skin. This really made sense to me, as my skin is noticeably improved when I spend time in the sun, so using light therapy seemed like a non-invasive treatment that wouldn't leave me with any side effects that medication has done in the past.
For use on the face, you need to be spending around 15 minutes each day using the compact. Initially I thought this may become a burden and the time I spent doing it would become shorter each day, but this hasn't been the case. The in-built timer is a handy way of accurately measuring the treatment times. The unit actually switches itself off too when the 15 minute time has been reached, so this is a handy backup in case you nod off!
There are two ways that you can use this compact. For use on the face, the detachable head lets you hold it up close for a more effective treatment, while the adjustable stand is a better option for treating larger areas, such as sufferers of acne to the back. I haven't needed to use the stand for treatment so I cannot comment on how effective it is on treating larger areas, but I have been impressed with the use of the handheld so would imagine it is just as effective.
Blurb in the instructions say that you should notice a difference within 4 weeks, however when I have a flare up I top up my skincare regime (a mixture of all kinds of ''wonder products' for problem skin) with the Lumie Clear and I can honestly say I can see a visible difference within 4 - 5 days. Left to run its course I can suffer with a flare up for 3 or 4 weeks, but using the Lumie Clear has dramatically reduced this to less than 5 days., and completely clears my skin in around 2 - 3 weeks. I cannot remember the last time I used my tablets or bothered to go see the GP. Self-medication all the way!
Although this product was quite an expensive outlay, it is a one off expensive that actually works. It can be used alongside medication and / or creams, and over time will actually work out to be a fantastic and cheap investment if you suffer long term with a skin condition such as rosacea. Do shop around though as I paid quite a bit less than the £149 RRP, spending around £105 on Amazon.
For some it will be nice to hear that this product is safe to use during pregnancy. I actually started suffering with rosacea during my second pregnancy and have been lumbered with it ever since (5 years). Had I known about this product then I wouldn't have hesitated to begin using it, especially given that it is safe during pregnancy. I did wonder when I first bought it, about the amount of UV light coming from the lamp, however after a quick search it turns out that the amount is much less than normal daylight so it's completely safe.
