Advantages: helps relieve aching muscles

Disadvantages: many people seem to suffer allergic reactions

A side effect to one of the tablets (chlorpromazine) I take to help stabilise my bipolar is torticollis - otherwise known as wry neck, my head muscles basically go into spasm and my head ends up turning slightly to one side, it is extremely painful and takes a few visits to my osteopath to put right. As I normally have to wait a few days to get treated I rely on this to get me through - I will take painkillers as well if it gets too bad but prefer not to pump my body full of any more medication as I am on enough as it is.

It comes in a can as shown above and is for fast relief of rheumatic pain, muscular aches and strains.

Main active ingredients
Methyl Nicotinate
2-Hydroxyethyl Salicylate
Methyl Salicylate
Ethyl Salicylate

To use this you need to make sure you are applying it to skin which is not broken - no cuts etc. The first time you use this I must emphasise the need to do so on a small area only. I am ok taking this but my teenage son had some reaction to it and came out in a rash - this disappeared reasonably quickly but he did say it felt like his skin was burning for a while - so please be careful. You also must make sure you don't spray too close to the skin to avoid the burning sensation rather than warming sensation you should be getting. Shake the can well first and then remove the lid and spray at least 6inches / 15cm away from the skin in three short bursts - do not be tempted to do more than this it is not needed and will lead to too much heat. You can re apply this up to 3 times a day if required.

What is it like

It has a heavily medicated smell to it and for me it offers some relief from constant aching muscles when my wry kneck occurs. It is not a miracle cure, it will not make you feel like dancing a jig or going mountain climbing, but as long as you are not allergic to any of the key active ingredients, it should offer help. The skin feels as though it is slowly warming up and this in turn reduces the amount of pain you are in.

It was also fairly useful when I had sciatica a few years ago but it failed to make any indent on my compressed discs in my back last year so I think it is effective help for moderate pain. I wouldn't recommend using it for long periods.

Summary: Definately worth a try

I can't stand this. It burns the skin when it gets somewhere you don't have pain.
