Advantages: easy to use, works quickly & effectively
Disadvantages: smelly
A few years ago I pulled a muscle quite badly in my back & it was recommended by my GP that as well as taking prescribed painkillers it was worth using a heat spray. I found this Mentholatum Deep Heat Spray in our local chemist & found it so good that I've always made sure we have some in our medicine cabinet 'just in case'.
I'm really pleased I had some as over the weekend as my older daughter & I decided to reorganise one of the bedrooms which involved a good few hours bending, stretching, carrying & lifting heavy books, furniture etc. The next day I woke up with aches & pains in muscles in my body which I never knew existed lol!
I reached for the Deep Heat spray & the effect was almost instantaneous - the areas of my back & shoulders which hurt the most were immediately warm & after a few minutes the aches had subsided. Don't get me wrong, they're still there, but much less intense than before I had a spray.
The effect lasted me (everyone's different I guess?) about 3 - 4 hours before I felt the aches & pains start to return so I reckon it's pretty good value at $3.75 for a 150ml can. I used 3 squirts each time - 1 each for both shoulders & 1 directed at my lower back - so the can should last a while.
Hubby sometimes uses it to relieve a pain he sometimes gets in his shoulders & it works well for him too.I also know a few 'sporty' people who keep this in their homes or in gym bags.
The can is a fiery orange & red one as shown in the picture & the plastic cap is very well-fitting yet easy to pull off & pop back on. On the front it states that the product provides 'fast relief' from the following -
- rheumatic pain & muscular aches & strains, fibrositis etc.
All the ingredients, directions for use & the usual areosol warnings are provided in samll print on the reverse of the can & it's stressed it's for external use only. This made me smile as no one in their right mind would want to ingest this spray as the smell is so strong! I can't actually describe the smell but it reminds me of a very intense Algipan/ Vick/ Tiger Balm sort of pong & once sprayed everyone knows you have a muscular problem!
However, in my opinion, it's great stuff as it works quickly, gives relief for 3-4 hours, reasonable in price & well worth a try.
Summary: works for me

- 10/09/09 I prefer the freeze version but I have frequently used both and it really helps when my back is having a bad day. |

- 08/09/09 I love the smell of this as it remindes me of Germolene. My dad used to use a cream version of this when I was a child, I remember it making my hands tingle when you rubbed it in. :-) |
