Advantages: Effective when taken immediately

Disadvantages: Price, not as effective when migraine in full swing

I have suffered from migraines ever since being a little girl at primary school complaining of a headache that starts with what I scientifically called "a tingle", and later developed into the mother of all headaches, sensitivity to light and the overwhelmig urge to curl up and die. Other painkillers such as paracetamol didn't even take the edge off the pain, and instead turned my feeling of nausea into full-on vomiting...not great when its play time at school!

After being frog-marched down to the GP by mother, I was diagnosed with migraines and prescribed Migraleve. I still suffer from migraines now and its the only thing that will work for me.

Migraleve is available on prescription or over the counter at your pharmacy. They can be bought in packs of just the pink tablets, just the yellow, or a complete pack containing a quantity of them both. The pink tablets contain paracetamol and codeine for pain as well as buclizine to help combat the nausea. These are to taken as soon as the migraine appears (the tingle!) and can help to stop the migraine from progressing. If the migraine continues to be a problem, then you move on to the yellow tablets which you can take every four hours.

I personally found the pink tablets extremely useful when taking as soon as the migraine starts. They stop the pain from getting anyworse and also combat the nausea. However, as it is not always possible to get these down your neck as soon as migraine strikes, they are not always effective. I actually found them to make me vomit if taken past the inital "tingle" phase.

Therefore I find any tablets useless once my migraine has fully progressed and therefore don't even bother with the yellow tablets. However, if they are useful for you it might be worth noting that they are exacty the same as low dose co-codamol,as both contain 8mg of codeine and 500mg of paracetamol. My local chemist sells own brand co-codamol at £1.19 a pack whereas a pack of yellow migraleve can set you back £5 upwards, and they have exactly the same ingredients.

My GP told me it might be useful to write a food diary to try and see if it was something I was eating that was triggering my migraines. After studying my eating habits I couldn't find a link. In fact they only common factor seemed to be when I was over-tired, excited or stressed, so until I live a more dull and mundane life, these tablet will have to do!

Summary: A life saver for migraine sufferers

I'm the same, I find once the headache has kicked in there's no point me taking anything - just got to wait it out. I keep a couple of the pink tablets in every bag I own, just in case :-)

That's good to know if my body ever gets used to these. I always thought they were just for tension headaches but handy to know they work on migraines too :)

They used to be a godsend for me - but they're just not strong enough now. I take Syndol instead - which make me very drowsy but pain free :0) Lexy
