Advantages: Soothes and heals a graze (and the grazed one)
Disadvantages: Sometimes hard to get hold of
Nelsons Hypercal cream is known as the "ouch cream" in our house.
--- The packaging ---
A cardboard box, containing a small (12cm) metal tube which can stand up on it's cap.
There is also the patient information leaflet. This is a natural remedy, but then, so is aspirin. It's always good to read the information before you use a medicine.
--- The cream ---
The cream contains Calendula officinalis tincture 0.45% v/w, and Hypericum perforatum tincture 0.45% v/w. Apparently. That's herbs to you and me - calendula for healing and hypericum for topical pain-relief.
The cream is white, non-greasy, mild-smelling and soothing.
--- Use ---
It is for cuts and grazes. You smooth it gently over a cut or graze and let it get on with it.
Now, we think it has several effects.
1) It soothes the sore area.
2) It does seem to make the cut heal more quickly. Clearly this is just my observation of its use on my three small children (so plenty of cuts and grazes!). I haven't done a scientific trial because that would just be mean. But I think it helps.
3) The "kiss it better" principle. My small toddler is convinced that his hurts are made instantly better when I kiss them. My two older children think this cream has the same effect. That and a plaster with pictures of dinosaurs on it.
4) It helps to stop a healing scab from itching (and thus stops it being scratched open again).
Now, moisturiser or germolene would achieve 1,3, and 4 just as well! But I am convinced by (2).
--- The cost ---
£4.15 for a 30g tube from Holland & Barrett
Summary: I shall continue to use it

- 28/04/09 A great tip. I hadn't heard of this one. It's me who's the accident prone one at our house, not the kids! |
