Advantages: Greatly reduces symptoms

Disadvantages: None for me...except the fact it doesn't cure them completely!!

I don't suffer from migraines often - usually only 2 or 3 a year - but they come without warning, they have no trigger and they usually last most of the day. When the headache does wear off I'm left nauseous and exhausted until I go to bed, and I usually feel as if I have a hangover the following day. My usual attempt to divert the worst is to take 2 ibuprofen and 2 paracetamol as soon as the auras start but I remember a colleague telling me that Nurofen Migraine tablets were excellent so when I spotted them in the chemist I decided I would give them a go.

++THE PRODUCT++
Nurofen Migraine tablets are white oblong tablets marked NMP, approx 1cm long. They come in blister packs of 12, which come in a cardboard box (design slightly different to picture above), along with a leaflet which has more info about the product.

Each tablet contains 200mg of Ibuprofen. Most people have probably heard of Ibuprofen but incase you haven't, or if you're not sure what it does, it belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). They work by changing the body's response to pain, swelling and high temperature.

++PRICE++
A pack of 12 cost me £2.69 from Boots.

++DOSAGE++
Dosage instructions are 1 or 2 tablets with water, then if necessary 1 or 2 tablets every four hours, with no more than 6 tablets in 24 hours. They would probably not be suitable for anyone who cannot swallow tablets. I found them easy to swallow, and indeed managed to dry swallow them just outside the chemist!

This product is not suitable for children under 12.

++EFFECT++
As I said above, I took 2 tablets the moment I stepped outside the chemist as I always feel that the sooner I take medication for my migraines the quicker the symptoms disappear. By this point my auras were a lot more severe and the headache was beginning so I went back to my office and sat with my hands cupped over my open eyes to protect them from the light. After sitting like this for about 10 minutes I took my hands off my eyes and the auras didn't seem nearly so bad. I spent a while sipping water and covering my eyes every so often. After about half an hour the auras had almost completely gone and all I was left with was a slight pain behind my right eye.

I then went for a short walk before coming back to the office. The auras had gone although I look very pale and I still have a pain behind my right eye and right forehead. However it was more like a normal headache than a migraine, which can be excrutiating. I didnt feel sick and my sight wasn't distorted in any way. I have never, ever had such a rapid reprieve from a migraine. It could be the case that this migraine wasn't going to be that severe anyway, but as the auras were so strong at the start, I'm pretty sure that had I left it alone it would have escalated badly. I did have to go home from work as I felt that sitting in front of a computer screen for the rest of the day would do me no favours. I felt a bit groggy for the rest of the day but when I woke the next morning I felt absolutely fine, which is a first for me after a migraine.

++CONCLUSION++
I found that these tablets are the best I've tried for catching a migraine as it starts and preventing it from getting too bad. I found a noticeable change in my symptoms from taking this product, compared to taking a standard paracetamol/ibuprofen. As I don't have migraines often, one pack should last a while. I've now cut the pack up and have 2 tablets at home, 2 in my handbag and the remaining 4 at work so that I always have some at hand if needed!

As with all medication it won't work for everyone but if you suffer from migraines I would recommend giving it a try.

Summary: Fast and effective relief

Excellent. Thanks for the insight into Migraine. A most unpleasant pain, by all accounts.
