Advantages: Doesn't affect sensitive stomachs

Disadvantages: Not strong enough

As some of you may know, starting or upping an exercise regime can actually make you feel worse sometimes: I have recently started long-distance walking plus going to the gym, in a bid to lose weight, but the downside is that now I have hurt my knee!

Needing something to soothe it, I have been and bought some Nurofen Ibuprofen Gel . It was around £3.19 and I got it from my local Boots, although it is widely available at all supermarkets and chemists.

Easily identifiable in a silver box, inside is a matching silver tube with tells you that it contains 5% ibuprofen. The instructions recommend that you use about an inch in length of the gel and massage it into the affected area, avoiding broken skin of course.

For security the end of the tube is sealed and you need to reverse the lid and poke a hole in the seal first. I did this, then rubbed it into my knee. It is not strong-smelling, just a slight whiff of something neutral and slighty anstringent smelling.

The gel is clear, so it does not stain clothing. I spent a good few minutes massaging it in, and it took about 5 minutes to dry. Once dry, it is not sticky so you can dress normally over the top of it. You can tell that there is something on the skin though, I would describe it as a thin film that sits on top of your skin. It is not intrusive though.

The claim is that it reduces pain and inflammation, and the plus point of a gel is supposed to be that it doesn't have to go through your stomach, so it's great for people with a sensitive stomach.

Well, I have been using it for a couple of days, and I am still sore I'm afraid. I would say I can detect a slight improvement in the few hours after the gel was applied, but it certainly doesn't rid you of the pain or swelling.

(I am continuing to use it, but in conjunction with white tiger balm, and a neoprene knee support).

Having said that, I have used this before on a stiff neck, and it seemed to work much better, so maybe it depends where it is applied on the body?

I would recommend it only as one of a collection of defences against pain, I don't think it's strong enough to do the job alone.

Summary: Use as part of your weaponry against pain, not on its own
