Advantages: Numbed my toothache very quickly

Disadvantages: More expensive than standard painkillers

I've had a lot of dental pain recently as I had been neglecting my teeth and had not visited the dentist in a long time. It was when my tooth began to hurt in such a bad way that it would make me yelp that I needed to get a strong painkiller. The incident that led to me buying Nurofen Plus was one afternoon, as I was standing in the queue for the bank and happened to bite down on a piece of chewing gum on the offending tooth and a blast of pain almost took my legs from underneath me so I muffed a scream and walked out to get some air and found myself instinctively walking towards my local chemist.

When I got to the counter, my guess would be that I was looking grey with pain and I asked the pharmacist for something that would help a bad toothache she held out two boxes and said that she recommended "Nurofen Plus" for bad pain, and as I have used Nurofen before and have found it good, I purchased the box of "Nurofen Plus" at £6.99. Expensive, but had she charged me £100 for something that would work, I think I may well have paid it, such was the pain. If I had been in a better state of mind I would have probably thought that it was too much but I was in agony and feeling like I was going to pass out. I paid quickly and left.

I took two tablets there and then and walked to a Park bench to gather myself together. Remarkably within 10 minutes the pain had subsided and I was able to get back up and go into the bank again and finish my messages in town. There was a nag where the pain was so I didn't forget that it was there totally, but it was certainly a nag I could cope with. Obviously when I went home I rang my dentist to let him know that I needed an appointment sooner than the one I had booked for a few weeks away. And in the mean time when my toothache came back I used the Nurofen Plus to counter-act it. I am not someone who uses very many painkillers as I am lucky to have kept good health in recent years, but I am happy to pop a pill when I really need to and feel very sore although probably are alternative remedies available to Nurofen, I wanted something instant.

"Nurofen Plus" is a mixture of Codeine and Ibuprofen. I know that Ibuprofen is not recommended for people with stomach problems such as ulcers, but luckily that is not something I have suffered from. Also it is not suitable while pregnant or for people with heart problems or breathing problems. Codeine is something I was prescribed after an operation so it must be considered a strong painkiller in its own right. Nurofen Plus can only be sold by a pharmacist due to their stronger nature.

When I have do have a toothache, headache, period pain or muscle ache I try to ride it out and do not generally take anything until it is interfering with my lifestyle, which this was. I don't think it was a placebo effect; the pain was numbed quite quickly; a huge benefit to me as I was out and about and needed to get home safely. Since then, my husband hurt his back lifting a piece of furniture and I gave him two of these and he too thought they were very effective on the pain.

I would recommend these for a very intense dental or muscular pain. Funnily enough I have not chewed chewing gum since that incident.

Summary: Super Painkiller for intense pain

The thing about Codeine is that it's an opioid (a relatively mild one, but nevertheless), and so can become tolerated and, in theory, can become addictive. It can also make you hideously constipated!

G ood, personal review though.
