Advantages: Fast acting, Easy to swallow, Best painkiller I've tried

Disadvantages: Pricey

There are so many over the counter painkillers available today, but in my opinion, nothing gets better than Nurofen. The main active ingredient is ibuprofen which doubles up as a very effective anti-inflammatory and reduces fever and high temperatures.

I get a lot of muscle and nerve pain, and although most painkillers are effective against the muscle aches, nothing has been able to even touch the nerve pain, apart from Nurofens! They are also particularly effective at lessening period pains and the aches you get from flu and colds etc, and an absolute must for anybody suffering from toothache! Arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis sufferers will also find these very effective, as the ingredients will help to reduce joint inflammation over time.

One of the biggest plus points with Nurofen is that you should feel considerable relief from your discomfort after no more than 30 minutes approx after your first dose. The anti-inflammatory effects can take considerably longer, a few days up to a fortnight in some cases.

The tablets are small round capsules, which make them very easy to swallow with water. The recommended dose for adults and children over 12 is 1 or 2 tablets every 4 hours, not exceeding 6 per 24-hour period. This medication is not suitable for younger children.

However, some of you will need to apply caution if taking this painkiller for the first time. Ibuprofen is well known for causing stomach problems, and if you did what my daft husband did and exceed the maximum dose, you may end up with a nasty stomach bleed. Similar to aspirin, anybody who suffers from stomach lining disorders, ulcers and so on should avoid anti-inflammatory type painkillers and stick to distilgesic type painkillers instead. And you should always ensure that you never take them on an empty stomach, to prevent potential problems from developing later. Anybody who is pregnant or suffers from asthma or bronchitis should consult his or her doctor
before taking this drug.

In addition, anybody who cannot tolerate caffeine may well want to take extra care, as Neurofens seem loaded with the stuff as I find to my cost. After two doses, I’m climbing the walls or in dire need of being peeled off the ceiling! They make me incredibly giddy and hyper, as my poor hard done by friends can testify! They suggest after two doses I should be locked away in a quiet room somewhere until the effects wear off!

There can be some nasty contra-indications for some people, in addition to the stomach problems mentioned above. Some users will find they suffer from dizziness and bad headaches although this is fairly rare. Other rare side effects include skin rashes, tinnitus and fluid retention. Most of these are clearly mentioned in the leaflet supplied with the tablets.

They are sadly, one of the most expensive painkillers you can purchase over the counter, but if you buy a simple packet of say Boots Ibuprofen tablets, not only will you save yourself an awful lot of money, but the effects should be the same. Not me though, I don’t know whether it’s because I trust the brand name, but I always find that Nurofen are better for me, possibly because they are absorbed into the bloodstream faster than other Ibuprofen tablets I have tried. Also, they’re easy to swallow; some other forms of Ibuprofen tablets seem to be huge!

Overall, Nurofens are one of the most effective painkillers, with the benefit of helping to reduce inflammation. I always keep a plentiful supply at home and have had no problems with side effects at all, other than a slightly embarrassing intolerance to the caffeine contained within them!

Thanks Louise, I didn't know about the stomach problems you could get. I had been taking them every day for another constant pain I have, asked my doctor about the stomach pains I was getting and he told me to take more! - maybe it's time to change doctors.....

I just read your profile and notice you're an ME sufferer - my wife is too and I've done an op on the topic.

Very good opinion here thanks. You can buy a generic ibuprofen at any chemist considerably cheaper than Neurofen of course. And it won't have the caffeine in it either! Tom

Superb opinion. I can use cheaper versions OK, but I have been warned there may be some problems as I get asthma - I haven't had any side effects though.
