Advantages: Convenient , Fast Pain Relief, Taste good!

Disadvantages: Relatively expensive

I have a problem. I do find it difficult to swallow tablets. However big or small it has always been a problem for me. I’m sure it’s all in the mind but it is a problem I have always had. Secondly, a majority of my headaches are at work so I need something convenient to take. Thirdly, and most important, it has to work!

Step forward ‘Nurofen Recovery’. I had never seen this product before on the shelves (but then again it could be ten years old) so decided to experiment on something new. It sure beats chewing tablets (yeah, I know).

Nurofen Recovery comes in a silver and blue box with the recognisable Nurofen text and logo. You get 12 in a box and priced at £2.25 (Sainsbury’s Pharmacy). The big difference is that they are self-dissolving which means no water and no whole swallowing. Yeah! On closer inspection I realised they were mint flavoured. Had these been specially made for me?

So as soon as I purchased them I had a couple(I did have a headache at the time, I'm not some Ibuprofen junkie). They are about the size of a 5p coin and look more like a Trebor Mint than a tablet. You get two sheets with six on each and these can be individually separated as the sheets have perforations, which would make it easier if you wanted to just put a couple in your bag etc.

You put them on your tongue and wait for them to dissolve. This takes about 30 seconds. They do taste of mint for the first 10 seconds or so but it soon wears off although they become tasteless which sure is better than the normal awful taste you get (that’s if you chew and don’t swallow, just me then?!). As most people will tell you, Nurofen is the best when it comes to relieving headaches/pain. My headache was gone very quickly.

If interested, here
’s the little science bit. Nurofen Recovery contains Ibuprofen 200mg. Most companies now use this ingredient as originally it was patented by Nurofen and was only available from them. Ibuprofen is a NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug), which change your body’s response to pain by providing relief. Basically what it does is block a substance called cyclo-oxgenase, which in turn can produce prostagladins, which go on to produce pain. Ibuprofen relieves this and that’s how it works. (Any scientists/pharmacists out there please accept my apologies if this isn’t 100% correct).

I am unaware of any other self-dissolving tablets for headaches on the market. I have seen those ones where you basically just have a sachet and swallow the tablet powder but they are stupidly expensive. I think they are made by Nurofen as well (?). Price wise they are not cheap and I have been told paracetomal and ibuprofen can be picked up for a few pence if you buy it non branded from supermarkets and shops like Savers and Superdrug. In that sense you may find it expensive at over £2 but you are paying for the convenience and the well-known pain relief you get from Nurofen.

So can you take them? Unsuitable for under 12s, people who had/had a stomach ulcer, phenlketonuria, you are allergic to asprin, ibuprofen or intolerant to phenylalanine. You can take up to two tablets every 4 hours, but no more than 6 in a 24hr period. Like most drugs there are side effects. Most people never get any of these but do include nausea, stomach ulcer, rashes, worsening of asthma and so on.

From a personal point of view I highly recommend these, as they are ideal for me.

Thank you for reading :)

I have problems swallowing tablets too. I always have to break 'em in half so they don't get stuck.

These are very good but I tend to just use Ibuprofen.
