Advantages: Effective and quick.

Disadvantages: Price.

I don't know about you but I seem to be reaching for painkillers often enough, whether for a headache, backache, cold, or anything else and I'm also searching for one that will get rid of the pain quickly, for a long time and without side effects.

Nurofen is a brand name, not the name of the drug that kills the pain. I think the drug in it is ibuprofen (but I don't have the box because I've stopped buying these and I'll tell you why in a minute) which is also used in other painkillers.

Nurofen make and market a wide range of painkillers, including painkillers made especially for children, painkillers in capsule form, and painkillers designed to target specific areas of the body, such as back pain. I have always bought the normal tablet type pain killer because none of the others are relevant to me. I'm not a child, I don't need to take them in capsule form, and I need a painkiller that will treat all sorts of things, not just one, like the one for back pain. I like the fact that all of these varieties are available though. I think that the one made for children would be very appealing because it is flavoured.

As I said I get general pains like headaches and the symptoms of colds, so I am reviewing this product based on its ability to kill those pains! Normally I take the painkiller when the pain is in its early stages, especially if I am at work or otherwise need to be very focused. I take two, with water. I find that Nurofen is brilliant. This is firstly because it works quickly. I find that within about twenty minutes the pain has subsided to a level that I can work with, and after about half an hour the pain goes away. I also find that I do not need to take any more painkillers, usually. This means that just two painkillers will take away any pain I have and allow me to get on with my day. I personally have not had any side effects (but everyone is different) which is another good thing for me.

So why did I stop buying these? Well, they're too expensive for what they are! When you buy other products, like baked beans for example, the branded version is usually better than the supermarket own version (not always, usually). However, with painkillers, the ingredient that kills the pain is the same (though I don't know if the fillers are different) which means that a supermarket own brand should kill the pain as well as a branded prodcut, like Nurofen.

The price difference is quite significant also. Nurofen sells at over a pound, but the supermarket own version is about twenty pence! This is a big difference and in this current economic climate it could be worth switching from a branded product to a non-branded one in such a case as with painkillers.

So I do recommend this product, but I prefer to get it cheaper. Perhaps you could try that too.

Summary: Buy the own brand.

As with all medicines, check if these are suitable for you, especially if you are taking other medication. Sadly my doctor has told me not to use ibuprofen containing medicines any more.

Like you, I buy the unbranded (though I buy it in the US, as it's cheaper still).

I do know that some people prefer the branded because of the coating - the branded tablets often have a smoother, more palatable (to some) coating, which may well suit those who struggle to swallow tablets.
