Advantages: Fast Working, Gets rid of the pain
Disadvantages: A bit expensive, Burns your throat
Now I always used to be the sort of person who tries shrug off pain without medication. If I had a headache I'd lie down and take a nap. If I had backache, I'd take a hot bath. That was until I started getting really bad period pains. The sort where I'd be physically sick from the amount of pain I was in. So one day after nearly collapsing, I gave up and brought the strongest painkillers that they sold in the shop where I work, Nurofen Liquid Capsules. Like all the other Nurofen products, the main active ingredient is ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), like paracetomol and asprin. NSAIDs are painkillers that work by affecting the chemical, prostaglandin, that cause inflammation in your body. With period pains, the cramps are caused by too much prostaglandin in your system which makes your uterus' muscles contract more strongly and for even longer than it should do. As a result, oxygen can't get to the tightened muscles, and we feel this lack of oxygen as cramping. This is why ibuprofen is so effective at getting rid of bad period pains. Nurofen Liquid Capsules are easy to swallow gelatine capsules that contain a liquid form of ibuprofen. Because the ibuprofen is liquid it allows the drug to absorb into the body much quicker than normal tablets. According to the packet, Nurofen provides relief from headaches, period pains, dental pain, migraine, backache, muscular pain, rheumatic pain, neuralgia, cold and flu symptoms, and fever. Dosage for adults is two tablets to be swallowed with water, and then take one or two capsules every four hours if necessary. You should not take more than six liquid capsules in any 24 hour period. It is not suitable for children under 12, however Nurofen do make medication especially for children. You shouldn't take Nurofen if your are allergic to NSAID's or have ever had a stomach ulcer. Like most drugs there are
side effects to taking ibuprofen. These include rashes, diarrhoea, wheezing, headaches, stomach pain to name a few. There is a very helpful leaflet with lots of information about Nurofen in the box that names all of them. I take Nurofen primarily for period pains, because it gets to work very fast. Although I do end up taking the maximum six tablets in a day as mine are so painful. For headaches I find that one tablet is all I need to get rid of the pain. I'm not a doctor, so I would recommend talking to your GP or pharmacist about the dosage that's right for you. The only side effect I get is a slight burning sensation in the throat after taking a capsule. This isn't as painful as it sounds, but is rather unpleasant. It does not mention this on the box or the leaflet. Nurofen is widely available. I get a 16 pack from Morrisons for £2.49. I have not yet seen an own brand ibuprofen with liquid capsules because I would buy a cheaper version. Although Anadin do make their own version as well. Definitely worth buying for the immense pain relief.

- 11/09/02 These are one of the best for ladies problems. I used to be similarly afflicted but now have a hormonal coil which sorts it out nicely! Kim :-) |
