Advantages: No more glasses
Disadvantages: Well expensive, and they can make you go blind.
I want to write about my recent experience with laser eye surgury. Or to be more accurate my non-experience with it.
I have been suspended from my job for a few months and I have not had much to do so I have been getting my teeth fixed and I thought I would go get my eyesight corrected by laser. First off you have to understand I live in the USA and I have a very good health insurance plan from my firm. So I called up a huge eye care center that advertises all over that they do this procedure. I first called my insurance company and they told me the claim code of the procedure that they cover entirely with only an eight pound co-pay. I then called the doctors office and explained that I only want to come in there for an evaluation to see if I was elligible for the surgury only if it would be paid for by insurance, so they took the info I had from the insurance company and told me it would be covered.
I went to the office and was clearly one of a million people they were "processing" that day. Herded like cattle around the office. They examined my eyes and gave me countless tests. They had all the new high tech gadgets and I had to look into some bizarre apparatus that was like lava lamps and special effects from a pothead store with lights and spinning spirals. They then diluted my pupils and put dye in my eyes. Then they had a pretty young nurse give me a bunch of literature to read and I had to take a test on my knowledge and whether or not i knew that "in some cases vision can be damaged or not corrected by the procedure". Another person came in and asked me to think about how different my life would be without glasses, ah how compelling, let's see, without glasses I would still be a big fat bald geezer with his whole body covered with Latino prison gang tattoos. The bird assumed I ride a bike and asked me if I thought it would be nice to ride my scooter without glasses, and the law makes us wear eye protection anyways. At this point I was pretty well annoyed and was feeling like I was being pushed around like people at a time share sales presentation in Cancun.
The most bizarre part came next. So far there had been very little pressure. I had been raised to trust and believe in doctors. Just doctors, not cops, lawyers or anyoine else. But I believed in doctors, I thought they stood for something, that they had a higher purpose than money. Now I realize they go to uni a long time and spend lots of money on their education. But it was the doctors that reduced themsleves to acting like hucksters selling extended warranties on tellies or selling underbody coating on new cars. I was shocked and appalled. They were really nothing more than used car salesman. I had watched this video when I first got there about the different procedures, how they use a little knife with a prestigous greek name to cut the cornea or something, or they can do it with a laser which is "25,000 times more precise" the movie also explained that most infections can be avoided by using the laser instead of the knife.
So it was ultimately the doctors who had to spell out the various products they offered, the basic for about $1250 per eye, the better one for about $1500 per eye, the best plan for $1750 per eye or the most safe and accurate procedure for $2150 per eye. I was just standing there in awe. Here this doctor is telling me, basically that he will perform a less safe and accurate procedure if I want to save a few bucks. I though ethics dictate that a doctor can only do the highest and best. It haunted me for days. I told them that I would just get the proc done that was covered by my insurance and then they tell me something they knew all along, my insurance did not cover what I needed. So it was all just to get there and have me pay out of my pocket. Then they explained their easy finance plan. A effin doctor standing here trying to get me to sign up for non credit check verified loan at 3 times the market interest rate. I lost all my faith. I went home in shock.
A few days later I was telling a guy I met about my whole experience. He peered at me through his own glasses and told me, "I am an eyedoctor in Canada, I can get the procedure done for free, and I haven't, does that tell you anything?"
I talked to other people and everyone knows someone that got seriously messed up by a botched job. I can't imagine being blind forever for the sake of vanity. You simply don't mess with your eyesight just for the hell of it. Plus wearing cheaters always allows for a good "pick up line" with other blokes. If they want to fight and want to let you choose whether or not you want to fight they can say, "I would kick your ass but I won't hit a guy with glasses" so then you can either reject their offer to bang by leaving your glasses on or you can take them off. I have a move I like to do where I start to reach for my glasses with my left hand and do a reverse punch followed with a snap kick. I laid this guy out in Charleston one time. I put him on his back and mounted him. and I told him as I was slamming his head onto the concrete floor, "You didn't get to hit this guy with glasses today neither"
So go ahead folks, go get someone to blind you and take all your money because you are too damn proud to wear glasses. See if the have Dooyoo in braille. Furthermore they tell you that even if you get this RK done that you will still need reading glasses later. I researched all this and found that close to 20% of people get screwed over by the surgury and end up with worse vision, sounds like a medically good thing doesn't it? But I don't know if these people chose the regular combo or supersized it.
Summary: I lost faith in doctors because of this
