Advantages: Makes a real difference to blocked noses
Disadvantages: Possible cause of nosebleeds, is a treatment not a cure
This review is for Otrivine Adult Measured Dose Sinusitis Spray. The Dooyoo category isn't very specific but hopefully this is the right place to put it.
This spray 'delivers a measured fine mist of medication'. Otrivine is a 'highly effective decongestant which acts gently within minutes to relieve nasal congestion associated with sinusitis for up to 10 hours'.
The active ingredient in this spray is Xylometazoline Hydrochloride 0.1% w/v.
It is recommended that after each cold you throw the spray away and buy a new one next time, but this isn't too much of a waste as I think you would get through most of a spray with a bad cold. It is also recommended that you do not use one spray for more than one person, to prevent cross infection. Children under 12 cannot use it, and noone should use it consecutively for more than 7 days.
The spray comes in a little 10ml plastic bottle with a large cone shaped nozzle at the top. You place the nozzle inside your nostril, and press down hard on the nozzle's surround. This squirts one dose of Otrivine up into your nose. You can then repeat on the other nostril.
Having a measured dose is a great idea because I often find with nasal sprays that I have no idea whether I have sprayed enough in. They are often difficult to control and you don't know how hard to press. But with this spray it won't dispense any spray unless you press hard enough, so it is easy to get the right dose.
I was really impressed with the results from using this. I had a completely snuffed up nose and after one dose of this I could breathe so much better almost immediately, and it lasted for a few hours. It made a huge difference and really cleared a lot of the nasal passage. It also reduced the pain I was feeling in my sinuses. After it wears off though you are back to normal, but you can take another dose after 8 hours as the maximum dosage is 3 times a day.
I would however like to mention that after a couple of days using this spray, I had the worst nose bleed that I have had in years. It's not unusual for me to have a small nose bleed for a couple of minutes when I've had a cold, but this one lasted for half an hour and was very heavy. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with the Otrivine but I thought it was best to mention it just in case.
I would recommend this spray for bad colds or sinusitis, but be careful if you are prone to nosebleeds.
Summary: An excellent sinusitis remedy

- 14/03/09 I get mad sinus problems in the summer when the pollen comes out to play... I've never found a nasal spray that actually works but it sounds like this could (potentially) be a good shout. Cheers, John. |
