Advantages: General pain killer used for all types of pains, No side effects, Okay during pregnancy

Disadvantages: None

Paracetamol is one of the most widely used and versatile over-the-counter medications today.

Common uses are for headaches, body aches, mild colds, mild fever and other general pains.

They are usually available in tablet form for adults, syrup form for children and suppository form for infants.

The tablets usually come in 500mg each and the maximum dosage at a time should not exceed 1g (1000mg). It is commonly taken a maximum of 4 times a day.

As stated earlier Paracetamol is one of the most versatile pain killers in the market today. Side effects are almost unheard off and generally this medication is effective. It can also be used by women safely during pregnancy.

Many of you will know Paracetamol under the brand names of different manufacturers eg. Panadol, Calpol and the likes.

Paracetamol is one of the cheapest medicines available but big companies selling them under a brand name inflate the prices drastically.

When I was in West Africa a few months ago, I visited one of my friends who had a pharmacy. They are selling Paracetamol tablets 500mg in strips of 10 tablets at a price equivalent to 7p. I always bring a 100 tablets (10 strips) with me and it costs me just 70p. You probably couldn’t even get 10 tablets here at this price.

As with all medications, especially those taken orally, make sure you do not exceed the maximum dosage. Always check the directions carefully before using these and any other tablets. Excessive dosage can lead to coronary failure and death.

Please remember that if you are taking any other medication please check the composition carefully of each medication. Many medicines contain some amounts of Paracetamol and thus may you accidentally go over the maximum dosage.

Other pain killers are available in the market such as Aspirin, Brufen etc. However the chances of side effects with these is far greater than Paracetamol. I personally am aller
gic to Brufen so Paracetamol is usually my one and only choice.

If you don’t already have this at home I would strongly recommend that you try and get a box of at least 10 or 20 tablets as it’s a must for the medicine cabinet. They will definitely come in handy some time or later.

It works wonders for wine hangovers...especially red wine hangovers. Doesn't seem to work too good on beer ones though - the raw stomach just can't handle it after more than a few pints...
good op (and lol@ leahslad!)
