Chickenpox, as most parents will know, is a rash of blistered spots which itch and upset, and make you feel generally miserable, until some form of pain relief is administered, usually calamine lotion. If the spots are scratched, it usually leaves a scar.

I have been waiting for 8 years for them to catch this miserable illness, and have had the obligatory bottle of calamine in the cupboard just waiting for the moment, although when the moment came, I found it as hard as a rock!

A friend recommended Piriton Syrup, and if I'd been none the wiser I would have just treated them with the multi- relief calpol. Piriton is advertised as relief of skin conditions such as nettle rash, prickly heat, dermatitus. No mention is actially made to chickenpox, but it is obviously a skin condition. The active ingredient is Chlorpheniramine maleate, but it also contains sugar, glycerol, alcohol, tingle flavour, peppermint oil, water and preservatives. It is suitable for children from one year, up to adults, with the dose varying according to age, from two spoons, to 12 per day doseage.

It was more expensive that calpol, but I can say that it was worth the extra. Within ten minutes it alters the child from a wailing red miserable spotty child, to being just a calmer spotty one, heaven! It really did make a huge difference, and took away their urges to scratch, which will reduce scarring.

The only disappontment was the foul taste, which from the ingerdients, I assume was from the peppermint and tingle oil!

Hi I remember getting really itchy with chicken pox when I was little. I will store this one away for my little boy.
