Pro Plus Tablets
Advantages: Keep you awake
I work on a bar and work all silly hours of the night, only to get up a few hours later to return again and I often feel like I will literally fall asleep in someone’s pint I’m so tired. I was introduced to the wonders of Pro Plus a few years ago, and they really are fantastic. I did have a bad experience with a caffeine tablet which made me really sick, but I have never had a bad experience with Pro Plus.
Pro Plus are caffeine tablets ‘for the temporary relief of tiredness’. You can take two tablets in three hours, but no more than 8 in 24 hours, they are only suitable for adults and children over 16 years old. I generally need only one tablet at a time, but you can take two at a time (so long as you don’t exceed the recommended dose). After you’ve taken a tablet, a couple of minutes later you feel a little bit more awake, then after about half an hour you feel properly awake, like you’ve actually had a proper night’s sleep.
There are precautions to take – don’t take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you’re sensitive to caffeine (duh!), if you have high blood pressure… and the list continues. Each Pro Plus tablet contains 50mg caffeine (tea and instant coffee contains, roughly, 20 – 73mg of caffeine per 100ml). You are only supposed to have a maximum of 400mg of caffeine a day, so you can apparently take 8 Pro Plus, or have a few drinks of coffee but you shouldn’t really drink coffee, coke, eat chocolate and have Pro Plus. However, I know many people who have a cup of coffee every hour or so and are fine (I think!), so I’m sure you won’t be harmed if you have more than the maximum dose, but you should always read the instructions and stick to them just to be on the safe side.
Pro Plus come in a blister pack containing small round tablets. The tablets are to swallowed with water. As they are small I’ve never had a problem taking the tablets.
Pro Plus are a great way to wake you up, but shouldn’t be used continually. They are not designed for every day use, and if tiredness persists you should see your doctor. However, as a quick ‘pick-me-up’ they’re great.
I bought a box of 24 tablets for just under £2 from Boots.
