Advantages: they do keep you awake & give you energy...
Disadvantages: can cause irritability & the shakes
I was lucky enough to be a student in the 70s when student grants were quite generous so I played hard & only did the work I needed to when deadlines were fast approaching.
I used to party most nights but when essays were due in/ exams were looming I used to rely on Pro Plus tablets to keep me awake all night so I could get my work completed.
I rarely used them after completing my degree because I was working daytime & didn't go out more than once or twice a week so there was no point.
I occasionally buy a pack if I need instant energy eg if decorating or 'blitzing' the house but whether it's because of a change in the ingredients, or the fact that it's 30 years later, I find the disadvantages of these tablets far outweigh the advantages.
They are available in high street chemists & some discount stores & the last time I bought some they cost £1.49 for a box of 24.
The tablets inside are contained in a blister pack & it's advised that you take 1-2 tablets during the day & no more than 8 per day. They should be used by those ofer 16 years of age & can't be taken if breastfeeding or pregnant.
The tablets contain 50mg Caffeine Anhthydrous Ph & Sorbitol which, in my experience, has given me a boost of energy within only a few minutes. The feeling made me feel a bit 'high' to be honest & made me very energetic even taking 2 in a day.
However, I experienced side effects which were not pleasant which is why I rarely take them these days.
I'd just like to point out that these MAY just be because of my mature & strange mind/body & may not affect everyone, but I thought it only fair to let you know what I experienced after a couple of hours after taking just 2 Pro Plus -
- irritability - (good job the family wasn't around!)
- anxiety.
- dry mouth.
- shaking hands ( I think the medical term is 'tremours'?)
- loss of appetite.
- inability to relax even hours later.
The 'plus' ( excuse the pun) side was that -
- I definitely had more energy & completed the tasks in hand.
- I felt optimistic & positive.
- increased my ability to concentrate.
Pro Plus are intended to 'relieve temporary tiredness' & 'can help to maintain mental alertness & make you feel less tired' - in my opinion these claims are correct & they do work but I have reservations.
- I think they should be kept behind the counter as I've seen youngsters (obviously under 16) buying them.
- Although there's a good explanatory leaflet inside the box I feel the possible side effects should be made clear on the box itself.
- I wouldn't recommend drinking coffee or ingesting any other drinks containing caffeine whilst using them.
summary
~
- too easily available?
- should have possible side-effects printed on the box.
- may be fine for some people, not so good for others.
- they definitely do work but I'd advise reading the leaflet first before taking any Pro Plus.
Summary: can be very effective if taken correctly - may not suit everyone
