Pro Plus Tablets
Advantages: It relieves temporary tiredness
Disadvantages: You shouldn't become addicted to taking them
Pro Plus are white coated small tablets that contain Caffeine. They are supposed to wake you up or as the box says "relieve you of temporary tiredness". They can be bought without prescription, but they shouldn't be taken if you have high blood pressure, a history of anxiety or are allergic to Caffeine or Sorbitol (Sorbital is a particular type of sugar). Each Pro Plus tablet contains 50mg of caffeine and to give you some idea of how much that is... a cup of filter coffee contains 50-100mg of caffeine and coca cola contains up to 20mg.
***What the box says***
Dosage: Adults (over 16 year olds) = 1 to 2 tablets with water as required in the day.
You should not exceed two tablets in three hours, or 8 tablets per day.
It comes in 7 different sized packs:
* 8 tablets
* 12 tablets
* 16 (A pocket pack of 16 tablets for £2.29 found in Boots)
* 24 (24 tablets for £1.70 found in Tescos)
* 36 (36 tablets for £2.49 found in Boots)
* 48 (48 tablets for £2.50 found in Tescos
* 56 tablets
So they are definitely more expensive in some places than in other.
I was introduced to Pro Plus on my first year at university, I was in halls and I was the only girl out of the 10 people on the floor, so I was in the minority. Several of the boys regularly took Pro Plus and were always 100% alert and ready to go out every single night. And as I'm sure everyone knows your first few weeks at university is all about drinking and going out and never sleeping. So as a girl I found it quite hard to keep up with these energetic, drunk guys...
...So one afternoon I was falling asleep and knew I had to wake myself up because I was going out that evening. There were a number of things I could I have done to wake myself up like go for a run... but let's not be silly... I was half asleep and a run was the last thing I was going to do. Besides I am far too lazy for that... and coffee never seems to wake me up for some reason. Perhaps I drink it too often so it never has an effect on me anymore. So I decided to ask one of the boys for a Pro Plus, he said take one tablet as I had never taken them before but I took two because I really needed a massive energy boost!
I was more alert after my two tablets of Pro Plus... whether it was psychological is another matter! However I did go out and buy a pack for myself. But I only take them when I really need them. Excess amounts of caffeine often, can't be good for you, especially as you'd probably end up not being able to cope with normal amounts of energy without them.
I asked my dad if he had ever taken Pro Plus and he said he hadn't and he wouldn't after a golf trip he had been on. He explained that one of the guys couldn't live without Pro Plus in his regular busy life but when they went on a golfing trip he decided not to take them and have some time out. Then dad and the other guys he was golfing with wondered where this mate had gotten to when they were ready to tee off. They found him asleep on a bench outside the main reception. That was how much not having Pro Plus had affected him.
So from that story my verdict is that they are fine to take, but not on a regular occurrence. Limit them to the days when they are extremely necessary.
Summary: A caffeine tablet to help to wake you up
