Nit picking
Nits are an occupational hazard for me as I have worked with small children all my working life and these animals often visit and infest childrens heads,
So first what is a nit? It is the egg of the head lice tiny little lice that lays its eggs on hair.
Let me tell you of an event in a working day similar events happened here at home with Sally and I.
Imagine a small child a head of short blond hair (could equally be any length and any colour) he is sitting next to me at the table working his hand is scratching just behind his ears, he concentrated on the game he is playing with me then his hand goes up to scratch his head just a above his neck. His hand keeps scratching that head so I say got an itch Johnny let me look.
I look at his head moving the hair and exam it ah haaaaa theres one, one more, next I can see an egg of a head louse. A small dull coloured round egg attached by a gluey substance close to his head very difficult to spot there are some hatched egg shells these are easier to see as it is white.
Theres a runner a tiny dark hair coloured insect, no this insect does not fly or jump it will crawl from one head to another. The heads louse is exclusive to humans does not like cats, dogs or other animals. The louse has six tiny claws to grip your hair and feeds by sucking blood through the skin on your head.
Anyone not scratching his or her head yet?
I do not draw attention to this Childs predicament; just quietly advise other staff who work with him. I then go to the office and ask for Nit letters to send home, dear parents a child in your child’s class has been found to have head lice please examine and treat your child as necessary. T he child with the unwanted visitors receives a letter telling parents to please treat him/her.
I go home that evening and get my nit comb out. I could just use hair conditioner nit comb this out and lice will stick to the conditioner and be easy to remove. If I had lice I could use a chemical product sold by chemists to remove them, but I prefer not to use chemicals now so I use my ROBI COMB, a robicomb is a nit comb that is electric made by Orris health brands. This comb is a nit comb that is attached to a white battery unit powered by 1 AA battery.
This comb is safe to use on adults and children with a few cautions.
Robi comb should not be used on or by people who suffer epilepsy, have heart disease have a pacemaker or other neurostimulator.
Do not use on broken skin or if there are sores
Avoid contact with eyes ears and mouth. When using comb hold both sides of the unit to avoid tingling sensation
This robi comb is only intended for use on the head not other parts of the body.
If you should purchase one to use, read all the instructions first before use.
So home I have long hair which I war lose and I do get my head close to childrens heads so home to check my hair. I comb my dry hair with regular comb first .Now I switch my Robi comb on buzzzzzzzzzzzzz buzzzzzzz the robi comb makes a buzzing noise while it is working. I comb through my hair with the comb at a 45% angle to the roots of the hair BUZZZZZZZZZ BUZZZZZZZ BUZZZZZZZ it stopped buzzing momentarily, that means its electrocuted a louse I look at the comb and there indeed is one. I remove the dead louse and continue buzzzzzzz buzzzzzz. It takes about ten minutes to do my hair I then go and wash my hair to make me feel better.
If I am really infested I will treat /comb my hair each day for 2 weeks this will ensure I zapp any emerging head lice.
I find using this is easy and effective and is preferable to using chemicals. If you have very sensitive skin you might feel a tingle when you use the comb. I am reassured this tingling is not dangerous Personally I do not experience this sensation.
This is not suitable for young children to use independently; an adult needs to do the combing.
Now I have finished my hair I clean the teeth of the comb with a little soft brush (again read instructions on leaflet.) and put the Robicomb away in its little pouch put it in a dry place.
Nit free I can get on with my life, Ahh If I have uninvited unwanted visitors I always check my husbands hair TOO. Too, if your child gets head lice check and treat all members of the close family.
The Robi comb is quite expensive I have seen it on the web from between £18 and £23, I think I bought mine at boots years ago. It has a 1 yr guarentee , but I must have been using mine for at least 12 yrs.
Thanks for reading wishing you nit free days Mary

- 09/10/04 ARGH! Thanks to you I am sitting here scratching like crazy. The power of suggestion is an amazing thing. Great op! With three young boys, two of which are in primary school nits can be a problem. We now keep their hair really short so that if they do catch anything they are easier to spot and treat quickly.
