Nose-blowing for the budget conscious!
Member Name: herumi
Advantages: Cheap, decent quality, nice boxes with no visible writing
Disadvantages: Not the softest or strongest brand available
For me, having a box of tissues at home is an absolute must- you never know when the dreaded sniffs and sneezes will strike, but when they do, you'd better be ready! There are quite a few brands out there to choose from, but I generally go for the supermarket own-brands, and as Sainsbury's is somewhere I often shop, I've got through quite a lot of these boxes of tissues.
The main reason I go for these over some of the more well known brands is price- a twin pack of these tissues costs £2.84, working out at 95p per 100 tissues (there are 150 in a box, in case you don't want to get your calculator out!), which is about half the price of Kleenex. You can also get these in single boxes, which are slightly more expensive than the double packs, but still considerably cheaper than the other brands.
The boxes are nicely presented, although Sainsbury's seem to change the packaging quite frequently. At the moment, they feature two-toned swirly patterns that remind me of large, hazy rose petals. This gives the impression that the tissues inside will be soft and smooth. These boxes are available in a variety of colours, handy if you're pedantic enough to want to coordinate your tissue boxes with your wallpaper! The two boxes I have at the moment are in green and peach, both nice shades, and cheerful without being too obtrusive- you don't really want your tissue box to become the focal point of your room! I also like the fact that the writing on the box is confined to its base, so that only the pattern is visible. The only problem with the boxes themselves arises from the large red stickers used to join the double pack. These are not easy to peel off, and I often find the coating of the box rips off in patches with the sticker. It's not a major issue, but can make the boxes look quite scruffy, which spoils the effect of the nice pattern.
The box also features a bit of blurb about the FSC- apparently, 'buying this product helps you care for the world's forests' because the fibre used in the tissues comes from responsibly managed forests. It's always nice to have your conscience appeased by seeing a logo like this on the things you're buying, although I recently heard something on the radio suggesting that the FSC scheme isn't working as it should. I can't remember the details, but it was enough to make me sceptical, and so I wouldn't put this forward as a major plus point of these tissues.
The tissues are easy to get to- the boxes feature the usual pull-off oval of card at the top, which comes off cleanly and easily to reveal the plastic cover underneath. This has a slit running through its length, through which you can pull the tissues out. Getting to the first can be a little fiddly, but once you've got hold of one, the others are very easy to pull out.
These tissues are 2 ply, pretty standard for boxed tissues, and I find them perfectly adequate for my everyday nose-blowing needs! They can get soggy very quickly if you have a cold, however (not the happiest of mental images, sorry!), so it might be a good idea to use two together. As for softness, again, these are fine for occasional use, being pretty smooth and not scratchy. The level of softness isn't quite up there with that of some of the more expensive brands, however, and I find that if I am blowing my nose frequently, it can get quite sore. Still, that's probably inevitable if you have a bad cold, so doesn't bother me too much.
I'd definitely recommend these tissues- they're perfect for everyday use, being reasonably priced and of a decent quality. OK, they're not the softest or strongest out there, but they're comfortable to use and do the job, and also have the advantage of coming in a nicely presented box. For a product like this that's just going to end up in the bin, I don't want to pay for a premium brand, and as these tissues meet my needs and my budget, I'll be sticking with them!
Summary: Perfect for everyday use.
