Advantages: cheap, works well, doesn't sting, smells very faint
Disadvantages: none
When I was a kid if you fell over and skinned your knee you knew that was only the beginning of your torture! The wound was washed with neat dettol and then germolene ointment would be applied. That was the standard treatment, whether you were at home or at school and the dettol stung like crazy then the thick germolene hurt to be applied. Thankfully these days we have Savlon cream.
Savlon cream is something you will find in most people's bathroom cabinets and I'm no exception.
It comes in a blue box with white writing across it and the tube is the same, it has the promise "skin healing cream" written under the name and costs £1.25 for 15g, £1.65 for 30g, £2.65 for 60g and £3.85 for 100g. Savlon now have a range of washes etc but this review is about the cream.
The antiseptic qualities of this cream stop infection getting into wounds and it is used for scrapes, cuts, minor burns and spots. Most tattoo artists recommend Savlon after you have a tattoo done and I used it on all 3 of mine.
The cream itself is white and not too thick, it isn't gloopy like germolene and the smell is quite faint, like very weak dettol.
My partner is a manager at a tyre fitters but sometimes he's very hands on and gets scrapes and grazes and Savlon is always what he uses on them. Recently I missed a step while carrying a very expensive piece of office equipment and in trying to save it took all the skin off my knuckles and again Savlon was my first port of call.
However it really shows it worth on spots. I'm sure most people have had a stubborn spot that you squeeze relentlessly only to find it leaves a big scab on your face. Due to the weather change I've had a couple of these recently and because the cold weather has dried my skin out they need different care to spots on oily skin. This is where I really realised how good Savlon is!
I had one of these spots on my jaw, I squeezed it until it was a big, painful scab and then realised it looked terrible. When you have a scab concealer is no good as it just sits in the scab and makes it more obvious so I pondered what to do about it.
I decided to try Savlon and applied some before I went to bed. I just applied enough to cover the area with a thin layer and left it to sink in while I slept. The next day I could hardly believe it but the "skin healing" claim seems to be true. The area was alot more healed and not anywhere near as painful. I applied it again the second day, twice.
By the third day the redness had almost gone and the scab was flaking off with new skin underneath. It's now been 4 days and I can apply concealer to the remaining pinkness to completely hide this spot. I'm sure the skin healing works, normally it would be a week before I got it to this point. Brilliant!
Overall I thoroughly recommend this, any minor scrapes, grazes, cuts and difficult spots will definitely benefit from it.
Summary: Thoroughly recommended
