Advantages: Variety of uses, cheap and effective

Disadvantages: None

Savlon Antiseptic Cream has been a permanent resident in our household for as long as I can remember. It doesn't get used much now that there are no kids around getting into mischief and acquiring cuts and scrapes, but it is still brought out on occasion and it's reassuring to know it's there.

Savlon comes in a blue, squeezy tube with a white, plastic, screw top lid. The information on the back of the tube says that Savlon 'cleanses and helps prevent infection in first aid and minor skin problems' and that it 'gently soothes' and aids in 'natural healing'.

Savlon should be applied with clean hands to the area in question, and there are no guidelines on how often this should be done so I assume that it can be used as often as is desired.

The cream itself is white, soft and not too sticky or gooey. It smoothes onto skin easily though it can take a bit of gentle rubbing in before it completely disappears, especially if you are using a lot of it. It has a slight antiseptic or medicinal smell but it is not strong enough to be offputting.

Savlon really works to soothe and make irritated skin feel better, and I have found it very helpful in lots of situations. Small scrapes and cuts, sore or bitten cuticles on my fingernails, minor burns, and even sore spots have all benefitted from it. At the moment I have a bad cold and am blowing my nose a lot so I have been using Savlon to rub around the edges of my nose to stop it feeling sore.

I would recommend Savlon as a really good item to store in the medicine cabinet or even in your handbag, just in case. You can buy it from most supermarkets or pharmacies. A 40 gram tube currently costs £1.61 at Asda.

Summary: A household staple
