Advantages: It works.. Good value..
Disadvantages: None for me..
There are a few things that don't occur to me when it comes to running my household and I'm afraid to say that keeping a well-stocked and up to date first aid kit is one of them. This means that whenever there is a 'bit of an accident' in our house a bit of panic ensues...
Due to a bit of an 'incident' my partner had a few months back whilst slicing a loaf of bread (don't ask!!) my attention was drawn once again to the lack of suitable stuffs I had in our house for cuts and grazes.
The next time I was in my local Savers discounted drugstore I therefore decided to stock up on a few bits of gauze, plasters, cream and bandages and that sort of thing so that we were better prepared the next time one of us did ourselves an injury!
One of the things that I purchased on this occasion was a tube of Savlon Antiseptic Cream. The cream is available in a few different sized tubes, but the one I purchased was 30g in size and this tube cost me around the £1 mark.
I decided to pop it into my luggage just before I left for my recent trip to Spain and I have to say that this proved to be a good decision! I used the cream on umpteen separate occasions whilst I was away and have therefore come to the conclusion that I will never have a trip (especially a trip abroad) without packing a tube of Savlon ever again!
The Savlon cream can be used for many different things. The reverse of the tube informs me that the cream "Cleanses and helps prevent infection in first aid and minor skin problems" so that I am in no doubt as to the role of the cream in a first aid situation.
The 'blurb' on the reverse of the tube gives directions about how the cream should be used "With clean hands gently apply cream to the affected area. Do not use on the eyes and ears."
I had come across Savlon many times before but mainly as a child, when one of us would have a fall outside and graze our knees or something my lovely mum would make a big fuss of us and apply some Savlon to the graze before putting a brightly coloured plaster on the affected area. Perhaps this is why I like the smell of Savlon so much... Nostalgia?
Anyway, the smell is indeed quite strong. I find it to be very 'clinical' and it most definitely reminds me of the smell of my local hospital! As this product is for first aid purposes, I cannot really say that the fairly over-whelming smell puts me off at all.
The cream, which is quite thick, can easily be squeezed from the tube and applied to the affected area. I find that the cream is not overly greasy, which means that it is not THAT difficult to absorb into my skin.
I used the cream for several different things whilst I was on holiday, the main one being for cuts and scrapes. I had a few blisters on my toes and feet from where my shoes and flip flops had been rubbing against my skin, and I found that when these blisters burst there was a sore and tender area of skin that was visible underneath.
After bathing in some lukewarm water, I applied a thin layer of Savlon antiseptic cream to the area, rubbing it in slightly. I then placed an Elastoplast on top of the graze/blister and left it overnight. I found that the area was kept nice and clean by doing this, which I think would have been difficult to achieve otherwise given all the sand etc that my feet were in contact with whilst I was away on holiday!
For the purposes of this review, I will inform you that I managed to cut a large section out of my index finger yesterday morning, with a (brand new) razor....!! After we ascertained that hospital assistance was probably not required, I cleaned the (large) wound and rubbed some Savlon cream into it to ensure the cut was kept clean. I won't lie to you - this stung a little and made the sore area even sorer, but this was only temporary. After applying a dressing and leaving it overnight, I can see this morning that the skin has already begun to heal. I am fairly sure that this is down to the use of the Savlon cream.
The cream really did prove to be very useful whilst I was away too, and two of my friends who were on holiday with me used it for little cuts and grazes too, as it was the only product of its kind that we had with us!
I would most definitely always keep a little tube of Savlon cream in my house now as it has really proved to be a fairly essential item, given how clumsy my other half and I are! I cannot fault it at all and for this reason I can only award it top marks... Five out of five from me!
Summary: A good value product for cuts and scrapes!
