Savlon Antiseptic Cream
Advantages: works effectively, cools and soothes, versatile, price
Disadvantages: a little oily once on skin
Savlon is an antiseptic skin healing cream which is designed to soothe and prevent infection from various skin issues. It should encourage natural healing of the area. Savlon can be used on cuts and grazes, bits and stings, minor burns and also shaving cuts. It can also be used to help heal chapped skin, blisters, spots and blackheads, sunburn and also nappy rash.
Savlon has two active ingredients which are cetrimide and chlorhexidine gluconate. It is available without the need for a prescription. This cream can be used by all the family but shouldn't be used by those who are allergic to any of the listed ingredients.
The actual cream is presented in a simple blue and white tube. The important product information is printed on the tube. A box is also supplied.
~Price and Availability~
Savlon is available in a 30g, 60g and 100g sized tubes from chemists. Prices start from £1.79 in stores such as Boots. You can also purchase a 30g tube from Poundland/Poundworld.
I remember my Mum having this in the house when I was a child. I was and still am, a very clumsy person who has experienced lots of cuts and grazes but thankfully, no broken bones (touch wood) as yet. My son seems to have inherited my clumsy nature so I always have a few different first aid products in our cupboard and often taken a supply with us if we are going day trips or on holiday. You never know when you may need these items!
I originally bought a tube of Savlon from my local Boots store but it got misplaced when we were at the seaside one day. I replaced it with a tube from Poundworld - excellent value for money in my opinion. The tube is a handy size for popping in a rucksack or handbag. It is very much like a tube of toothpaste so you would do well not to get them mixed up! A fresh tube is presented with a foil seal from freshness.
Our main use for this cream has been to apply it to both my own skin and my sons when we have cut or grazed ourself. The cream is easy to dispense and whilst it looks very thick, it slips out the tube quickly! This cream should be applied to the affected area with clean hands. I normally give any cut or graze a wipe over to clean it before applying this cream. A little goes a long way with this cream. It massages into skin fairly easily and feels cooling and soothing. I find it a very comforting cream to use as it immediately takes the sting and nip out of a cut. Given my sons sigh of relief, I can assume he appreciates the cooling effect that this cream offers too.
I find that the cream does become quite oily feeling on my skin after a short while or rubbing it. It doesn't feel overly tacky though which is a benefit. The cream is scented and quite medicinal smelling with a powdery undertone. It isn't overpowering or unpleasant in my opinion. Once the cream has settled on skin, a plaster or dressing can be popped over the top or the area can be left to breathe naturally.
Savlon is definitely a high quality antiseptic cream in my opinion. On cuts and grazes, I find that it protects the area and keeps it free from any germs which may cause infection. The effects are long lasting too and I have yet to witness an area become infected. I have also used Savlon to treat minor burns that I have experienced from becoming distracted in the kitchen and have been impressed by how quickly it calms the burned area and stops it from becoming sore and blistered. It is very kind to sensitive skin and none of my family have experienced any irritation from the included ingredients.
Savlon is very soothing against sunburned skin which I have much experience of. I often forget that it can become very hot in Scotland or rare occasions and whilst my son is always well protected with sun cream, I often forget about my own skin. I do favour a good quality aftersun cream though as one 30g tube of Savlon wouldn't last long if I was slathering it all over my skin. It does seem to work wonders on my hands during the Winter as it protects them and soothes any discomfort associated with chapped, dry hands.
Savlon is one of those products which has many uses and performs to a high standard. It is versatile, family friendly and something which I wouldn't be without. I find that it helps promote healing of various skin problems and does so in a gentle way. It is simple to use and works an absolute treat. I cannot give it any less than 5 stars.
Thanks for reading :)
