Savlon Antiseptic Cream
Advantages: Fights infection
I keep a couple of tubes of Savlon in the cupboard just in case and I do use it a surprising amount. It doesn't cost much- around £2 for 30g from Tesco was were I last bought it, but it can be found cheaper in Home Bargains and Poundland sell the same amount for (unsurprisingly) a pound.
Savlon is an antiseptic cream containing the antiseptics chlorhexidine gluconate and cetrimide that kill micro-organisms on the skin. The tube of white cream comes in a blue box. The box tells us that it soothes and helps prevent infection. The tube being plastic makes it easy to squeeze out, also unlike metal tubes it doesn't damage.
The cream smells pleasant enough, it reminds me of baby powder mixed with germolene. To use just rub a small amount into the effected area, then cover with dressing if necessary. Usually I just leave things uncovered if I can.
Generally speaking I don't tend to put anything on cuts or grazes unless the skin appears to be getting infected (gets hot, red and oozes puss). When it does I apply a good size blob of Savlon, the cream is creamy and soon absorbs into the skin only leaving a slight greasy residue- but only slight. Immediately the area feels soothed, and cooled down and feels slightly numbed, it seems to stop the infection pretty quickly.
My daughters ear piercing went bad and I thought a trip to the doctor would be necessary but applying Savlon at bed time really cleared it up, it was much better in the morning and had cleared up altogether within days (I've read mixed reviews about using antiseptic creams on piercings as it's claimed to interfere with natural healing and cause scarring but we had no choice as it was infected- same with tattoos some reviews say use it others say don't.....).
Mostly I use Savlon on sore or chapped skin, burns especially respond well to it- it really soothes them and I think helps them heal quicker.
I've got a cold and my nose feels like I'd been using sandpaper instead of tissue. It was so sore last night I couldn't touch it. After applying some last night I've woke up this morning and it's 99% better. I also popped a dab on my chapped lips which seemed to help.
I use it on sore spots (still getting spots at my age!) it doesn't seem to clear them up much, but sometimes they are really painful- especially after I've picked one- Savlon numbs and calms them down.
A must have in the house 5 Stars from me
Summary: Savlon seems to soothe and mend and a little goes along way
