Savlon Antiseptic Cream
Advantages: Almost always prevents infection!
Although there are other brands of antiseptic cream on the market (which I have used but never bought), Savlon is probably the most well-known. Although admittedly I've never had any bad experiences with other antiseptic creams, Savlon is almost always the one that I buy.
I am never far away from a tube of Savlon, and have 3 or 4 on the go in various places around the house. The tube which I am currently referring to for review-writing purposes has an expiration date of June 2007 (it is crimped into the end of the tube) which I found in a rarely used first aid kit. 6 years later I believe that it is still effective (despite the warnings), although perhaps when I have children I won't use products so far after the expiry date. As the daughter of a GP, using out of date creams was never an issue - but, I'm not a medical professional myself!
A Savlon tube is easy to spot (good in an emergency) as is simply a mid-blue with white writing on it.
---What's in it?---
Savlon is an antiseptic skin healing cream which cleanses and helps prevent infection in first aid and minor skin problems. I find that it is very soothing as a cream, but does some good too!
The ingredients are Cetrimide 0.5% w/w & Chlorhexidine Gluconate 0.1& w/w - also contains cetostearyl alcohol, liquid paraffin & methylhydnoxybenzoate, propyllhdroxybenzoate, perfume & purified water. Quite a mouthful some of those names!
* Keep out of eyes and ears (this is for external use only)
* If symptoms persist consult doctor or pharmacist
* Keep out of reach of children
* Store below 30 degrees C
* Don't use after expiry date
Simply 'with clean hands gently apply cream to the affected area'. It stings slightly (sometimes more than slight depending on the cut) on application, but I tend to see this as a good sign, like it's working!
As a person who self-harms (although rarely in the past year) I have used Savlon LOADS over the years. Even when cuts haven't been made in the most sterile of ways, Savlon has always done the trick and I've only ever had one cut which got infected and required antibiotics, which really is amazing!
Following a cut or scratch I tend to apply Savlon pretty liberally. If it is just a scratch then I leave it uncovered, but with cuts I usually dress them too, and of course I reapply Savlon and change dressings as required.
I also find Savlon useful if suddenly I get a random itch on my arm/leg for no apparent reason. I find that it sooths it pretty much immediately.
Savlon cream is white and slightly shiny. It blends into the skin well, and only remains greasy if a lot is applied. Admittedly, sometimes I have just slapped it on and hoped for the best, particularly after having many cuts - but I have never been let down.
The sell I think is nice, clean, and slightly medical (but in a good way). I find it to be a very reassuring smell, and like I'm really doing something to help heal my wounds.
To give some examples of the size of tubes and cost:
A 40g tube costs £1 in Poundland.
A 60g tube costs £2 in Tesco.
A 100g tube is £3.38 in Asda.
Everyone needs an antiseptic cream in their first aid cupboard, and in my opinion Savlon is the best. A tube lasts for ages, and although I have several on the go, the fact that there is still some in old tubs indicates how long it lasts.
On a separate note, when dealing with possibly infected ears after piercings, I have found that Savlon's First Aid Wash is amazing. Although that is another review in itself, I think it illustrates what great products Savlon provides. They do numerous products, so you should be able to find something which suits you!
Summary: A must-have in every house!
