Advantages: No drugs, no side effects.
Disadvantages: Have to remember to keep them readily available
Sea Bands are something I became aware off five or six years ago and as a couple of family members were quite badly affected by car sickness or motion sickness as it's called. While Stugeron tablets did offer relief this seemed to be a non invasive, no drug, type of a remedy and, as such, worth a shot on the basis that they were not going to do any harm.
As I remember at the time the claims for prevention of nausia extended beyond the travel sickness complaint, encompassing things like morning sickness, anaesthesia, chemotherapy and all conditions which induce nausea. The Sea-Band is a knitted elasticated wrist band, which operates by applying pressure on an acupressure point on each wrist by means of a plastic stud. No drugs, means no side effects associated with anti-nausea drugs and can be worn on each wrist whenever you feel nauseous. They are very safe to use for children and adults alike.
Do they work? I have heard the pyschosomatic effect theories; i.e. if you think they will cure you they probably will and being based on acupuncture it's an area of medicine that people have questioned. But accupuncture is an ancient science and has a sound basis built on indisputable results achieved down through the years so there is reason to believe in the beneficial effect of wearing the bands.
Experience of their use in my family has been very positive so much so that any journey of more than a few miles is preceeded by the almost ceremonial procedure of fitting the bands. I say ceremonial because fitting involves a routine where you must carefully measure, in fact two finger widths, to find the correct position for the acupressure points on each wrist. People are sometimes dismissive as to their effectiveness but I wonder how much attention they pay to positioning in the first place and to maintaining position. I appreciate it would be difficult with young chilren. However I empasis this is crucial!
Within my family experience I can tick the boxes in regards to the use Sea Bands or "Sick Bands", as we call them, for travel, chemo and other general causes and say that we each have benefited enormously from their use.
Summary: Safe, effective, proven prevention.
