Advantages: eases for a bit

Disadvantages: doesn't work for long

I've had a niggly sore throat for a few days and yesterday it finally got bad enough for me to give in and buy something for it. Asking for strepsils, I got presented with a packet of strepsils extra in blackcurrant flavour.
They are designed to ease the pain of a sore throat. In the past I have tried not to use throat sweets because I find they dull the pain whilst sucking them as the anaesthetic properties work at this time, but the pain relief doesn't last very long.

Strepsils extra are marketed to have a double action in them to relieve the pain with the anaesthetic and then they have antiseptic in them to fight the bacteria and infections that cause the sore throat in the first place.

My packet contained 16 5 pence sized solid lozenges which are packaged in two blister packs within the outer shell of a cardboard box.
They are designed to be taken orally by sucking slowly every three hours, and you shouldn't take more than 12 in 24 hours.
These lozenges shouldn't be given to children younger than six years old.

As I retrieved my first one and popped it in my mouth, the taste of blackcurrant was quite strong to begin with but this was soon overtaken by a powerful medicinal taste. It wasn't unpleasant but it took away the taste of any blackcurrant that had been there to start with.
I found that as I was sucking my throat felt slightly more protected than it did without using one, but it didn't actually relieve me of all pain at any one time, just dulled it slightly whist sucking the lozenge.

A few minutes after the lozenge is finished the pain was back with the same force it had been before eating the lozenge. Well I couldn't just pop another one in my mouth could I so I was going to have to suffer for a while.
It would be very tempting to eat these one after another just to get some relief from the pain, but I sense there are cheaper and more effective ways to rid my throat of all pain than shelling out the £4 that I did for these.

I always wonder why I get sucked in and buy these wonderful remedies that don't actually work as well as they state on their packaging. It's true they tasted nice to start with and they worked marginally, but I will have to resort to gargling with some strange concoction if the pain is still there when I have finished the packet.

For allergy purposes these lozenges contain a lot of words that I can't pronounce let alone begin to write, so please read the packaging before buying these if you do have allergies to certain medicines.
Overall these aren't worth wasting your hard earned cash on.

Summary: an aid for sore throats

Try Merocets for an average sore throat and merocaine for a serious sore throat. They both work. I was recommended them by a nurse.

I've stopped trying over the counters and usually head to the Dr's
