Advantages: Got to work in around 36-72 hours for me
Disadvantages: More expensive than the regular Strepsils
I have been suffering with a persistent sore throat for several weeks now and regular Strepsils have not had a very positive effect in terms of clearing it up. In desperation, I picked up a packet of these Strepsils Extra lozenges in the hope that a stronger option would do the trick.
If you have never taken Strepsils before, they contain antiseptic to fight against the infection that led to the sore throat in the first place and another ingredient to reduce the pain. Strepsils Extra contain antiseptic too, and an anaesthetic to reduce the discomfort. This double action claims to treat the infection whilst making things a bit more bearable.
In terms of how they look and feel, these did not appear noticeably different to the normal Strepsils which made me a little cynical as to whether they would do what was being claimed on the box. At first, I did not feel any improvement with my sore throat and I was majorly doubting whether they were actually any more effective than regular Strepsils at fighting sore throats. I took one lozenge every four hours, and am now noticing a definite improvement after taking my ninth lozenge. The sore throat has not yet gone but the discomfort is much less than it was.
If my experience is anything to go by, you do not need to take the entire packet of lozenges. I have a pack of 36 lozenges and have not quite finished the first strip (of three) so a packet of this size should last for two sore throats before you need to get any more.
The packet of 36 lozenges cost me £4.08 from Sainsburys. I have the blackcurrent flavour but you can also buy blackcherry. They are a bit more expensive than the regular Strepsils. I used to buy the Honey and Lemon flavour of those and they were around £3.50 for the same size packet. It is worth paying the difference though as these really have worked much better than the regular Strepsils for me.
Summary: These have worked great on my sore throat!
