Advantages: Really great at relieving painful sore throats, nice taste

Disadvantages: Packaging is poor, quite expensive compared to other throat sweets

I've had the cold to end all colds for a few days now. Cough, sore throat, runny nose, dizzyness, the works. Yesterday I asked my colleague to pick me up some strepsils while he was at the shop, and he came back with a box of 36 Strepsils Extra, Blackcurrant flavour.

The pack cost me £4.08 which is just over 11p a soother. I actually think this is quite expensive! The soothers are in individual trays, with a foil lid to keep them fresh and clean. However this only works if they are in the box. I threw a line of strepsils in my handbag and within a day the foil was shredded by other items in my bag and the soothers had to be thrown away.

The Strepsils are 'extra' as they contain anaesthetic and antiseptic. Because of this they are only suitable for adults and children over the age of six. Maximum recomended dose is one every 3 hours.

On taking a soother the relief is almost immediate. The grinding pain in my throat subdued to a dull ache, and stayed that way for nearly two hours. The soother is also a fairly mild blackcurrant taste, and tastes more like a sweet than some of the horrible medicinal throat sweets you get.

Despite the poor packaging, I would not go back from these as there are fantastic at doing the job. However as you can only have one every 3 hours when you have a truely racking cough I would have some Halls soothers on hand for the inbetween times.

Summary: Great for when you're poorly.
