Advantages: 2 min relief
Disadvantages: After youve finished it the pain is back
I dont know whether it is the terrible weather, on the onset of autumn but right now im finding myself with a sore throat and feeling pretty miserable. I raided the medicine cabinet and found myself with two choices, some honey and lemon strepsils and some fishermans friends.
I decided to give the strepsils a go as they contain two antiseptic ingredients :- 2,4-Dichlorobenzylalcohol and Amylmetacresol.
Never heard of either of those but I decided to give them a chance. There are 16 lozenges in the box in two blister packs of 8. You can break them into sections of 2 to put in your pocket im presuming.
They are suitible for children aswell as adults although it doesnt say from what age. I just measured one and it is just short of 2cm in width, I think this may be too big for a small child and could cause choking.
The round yellow lozenge tastes a bit like a sherbert lemon sweet but also they are like the lemon lockets. It disolved pretty quickly in my mouth and was gone within about 5 minutes. At the time i had some relief from my sore throat but when id finished it the pain was back at the same level it was before.
It says on the box that I have to wait another 2-3 hours before I can have another one. I dont see how anyone with a sore throat could wait this long for a few minutes relief.
Im off to try the fishermans friends next and see if they are any help for me. Im sure they are cheaper too, ive just had a look for the price of the strepsils on the net and i found a bigger box than i had (24 lozenges) for 2.19.
I would not recommend these at all they really didnt make any difference except when i was eating them.
Summary: Give them a miss

- 04/09/08 Try gargling with salt water. It tastes foul but it does help fight throat infections. |
