Advantages: Variety of flavours, Slight medicinal value
Disadvantages: Does not greatly help your throat, Other natural remedies like gargling provide the same effect , Too expensive
A couple of weeks ago I had this terrible sore throat, which was in part caused to my over indulgence in the booze and the cigarettes the night before. The wife had a strip of Strepsils at home and suggested I try them. Before I get into my reaction to the effects of these lozenges I will first like to highlight on the product itself. Strepsils have been around for ages and in more modern times have adapted to changing ways and competition by coming out with an assortment of different flavours but all with the same basic ingredients and supposed effect. Strepsils are meant to provide you with temporary relieve from sore throats and to clear your nasal passage to enhance your breathing. It is recommend that you should not exceed more than 12 lozenges in a 24 hour period. However one of the problems associated with Strepsils is there uncanny resemblance and association to our good old boiled sweets. Due to this you can, in all probability, exceed the desired dosage without every realizing it. Strepsils contain two main ingredients, which are Dichlorobenzyl Alcohol and Amylmetacresol. These are the properties that are active in tackling your sore throat problems. Strepsils also contain high amounts of sugar, as with normal boiled sweets and therefore anyone taking these should take this into consideration. Back to my appraisal of the product. I promptly took one of them and waited to feel the benefits. I must say that I was very disappointed. It hardly provided me with any relief. I think the only advantage it provided was that it made my mouth taste better and more fresher but other than that, there was nothing else worthwhile about it. I proceeded to the bathroom and promptly had a gargle with salt water and then a few minutes later with Listerine. This infact provided a much better reaction and greatly helped in relieving the symptoms. Strepsils go for around £2.20 for a pack of 24 whi
ch to me is a waste of money. You would be better of buying yourself a pack of Trebor Mints or some stronger Peppermint sweets. Overall I was very disappointed and un-impressed with the product. To me they are just an expensive hard boiled sweet with the slightest hint of medicinal values. Stick to the gargling and the peppermint sweets if you have a sore throat.

- 28/10/01 Only partly true - have you ever tried the Strepsils antiseptic lozenges (I think that's what they call them) - you get them from behind the counter at the pharmacist. These are fantastic - a few years back I had the worst sore throats ever and had to have my tonsils taken out - without these I would have been in complete agony! I do agree that the normal Strepsils are a waste of money though...
