Advantages: Can be used for almost anything
Disadvantages: None
I had always been under the impression that Sudocrem was used for nappy rash only, that was until I had a slight accident at a friends house a couple of years ago. I was helping her to prepare for her daughters birthday party, and caught my arm on the oven as I removed a tray of fairy cakes. My friend immediately applied a thin layer of Sudocrem to my arm, the pain disappeared after about a minute, and there was no scarring or blistering. After this I have been a massive Sudocrem fan and always have a pot in the house.
**What is it**
Sudocrem is initially a product for treating nappy rash. It helps to soothe, heal and protect skin from further irritation. Sudocrem can also be used for other skin conditions that require a protective antiseptic cream. Due to some of the ingredients it also provides additional healing, antibacterial and antifungal properties.
**Packaging**
Sudocrem comes in 4 different sizes - 60g, 125g, 250g and 400g. I usually buy the 250g size which normally costs around £4.50 from Boots.
Sudocrem comes in a grey plastic pot. The lid is push on, and I do find that this can come off very easily (speaking from experience after it came off in my suitcase). There is a stick on white label with all of the required information, and Sudocrem written in white on a red background on the top edge of the label.
**Appearance**
Sudocrem is a very thick white cream. It has a very pleasant smell, which according to the ingredients is lavender.
**How does it work**
Sudocrem has a base which forms a protective barrier protecting it from water. This helps to stop any anything coming into contact with the skin.
In addition, Sudocrem can help to soothe sore inflamed skin whilst leaving the skin feeling soft.
The website also states:
Sudocrem contains a number of ingredients and properties, such as:
· hypoallergenic lanolin, to help provide emollient properties
· zinc oxide is an astringent which reduces the loss of tissue fluid
· benzyl benzoate and benzyl cinnamate are amongst the ingredients of Peru Balsam, recognised for its healing properties
· benzyl alcohol is a weak local anaesthetic which acts to ease localised pain and irritation. It also acts as a disinfectant/antibacterial agent and is responsible for protection against common bacterial contaminants.
**Dosage**
Apply a thin layer to the affected area as required. I usually find that adding a small amount and lightly rubbing in is best so that only a thin layer is left. Sudocrem is meant to leave a protective barrier so it wont be completely absorbed into the skin. I tend to apply this at night as it can leave white marks on your clothes.
**Ingredients**
15.25% Zinc Oxide
0.39% Benzyl alcohol
1.01% Benzyl Benzoate
0.15% Benzyl Cinnamate

**Warnings**
As with most medicines, there are warnings on the pot.
It recommends you to keep out of eyes and the mucous membranes. Do not use if hypersensitive to any of the ingredients.
**Uses**
Sudocrem can be used for:
· cuts and grazes
· minor burns
· sunburn
· nappy rash
· Eczema
· Bed sores
· Surface Wounds
· Acne
· Chilblains
For anyone who isnt convinced, my father developed severe eczema on his stomach. The doctor prescribed two lots of creams, which he had to pay prescription charges for, and neither worked. I lent him my tub of Sudocrem and within a week it had completely disappeared. He now also keeps a tub in the house.
I would recommend this to anyone, it is always handy to have a tub in the first aid kit.
Summary: A cream that heals almost anything

- 14/12/05 Important warning - do not put in easy reach of 22 month old child, unless you want your walls smeared with the stuff. Yes, that did happen. Quite some time ago now, mind, as my daughter is now 14...
Cheers. |
