Advantages: heals, reduces pain, stops infection, water resistant

Disadvantages: thick cream that can be sore to apply to sunburn

This is a product that EVERYONE should have in their house.

Most people have heard of sudocrem; it is a well known barrier cream for nappy rash that is recommended to new mums by their midwives & health visitors.

I have to admit that ten years ago I was selling the stuff to said health visitors & midwives! On my training course i was introduced to the fact that this product was licensed for more than just nappy rash, but at that time that was the direction the company wanted to take. I was given millions of sample sized pots that were very popular with our customers (and my friends who were having kids!). This gave me the chance to try sudocrem myself on one of the many other licensed indications.

I think the first time I realised this cream was good was on a holiday that year to the canaries. I was caught out by the strength of the sun and got a bit burnt. Seeing as burns is one of the indications i gingerly applied the sudocrem to the burnt bits, quite sore to do as the cream is thick, but the heat of my skin soon softened the cream & it rubbed in easily. Within a few minutes the tenderness of the pain had gone away so my skin was no longer really painful to the touch: dont get me wrong i could still feel the burn! After applying this throughout the evening the next morning my burns had really subsided.

Several others in our complex had had the same over exposure issues so I lent out my tub; needless to say everyone was most thankful!

The other advantage to sudocrem is that it forms a water resistant layer so doesnt wash, rub or sweat off very easily; ideal for the sunburn issue!

Since then sudocrem has been my staple household cream. My family used germolene when i was younger, and i know many people keep the cupboard stocked with savlon; however sudocrem actually helps the skin heal. These other products dont do this they are merely antiseptic creams ie stop your wound getting infected.

I'm glad to see the manufacturers of sudocrem have finally woken up to the opportunity that they have by advertising the additional advantages of their product - hopefully many people will discover how great a product this is.

If you are using for general household medicine as opposed to the babies bottom use then the smallest tub will last you forever. I bought my tub over 2 years ago, its still 3/4 full & its shelf life is listed as 2011.

Sudocrem is has the following ingredients
Zinc - helps with the healing process, helps prevent fluid loss
Lanolin - emoilient
Benzyls benzoate & cinnamate - help with the healing
Benzyl alcohol - local pain killer, antiinfective

Summary: alround healing cream
