Advantages: Easy to apply, works brilliantly

Disadvantages: None

I don't think Sudocrem itself needs much of an introduction - everyone seems to have heard of it. On the tub it says it is for nappy rash, eczema, bed sores, sunburn, minor burns and cuts & grazes. I have never used it as anything other than cream for nappy rash (although my folks always had a pot in their cupboard even though nobody wore a nappy so they obviously used it for other things) so this is all I am going to review it as.

I bought it as one of the 'must haves for the medicine cupboard' before my son was born. I actually bought a large tub and a small tub; large for home and small for the changing bag, just in case. However I am annoyed as I bought them from Boots and then found out that Asda sells the cream over a pound cheaper for the large tub, so I wish I had looked there first. I paid £2.65 for a 125g tub and 3.95 for a 250g tub. They are the only sizes Boots sell but I found out later that you can get a smaller and a larger size elsewhere.

The packaging is very simple and unappealing. The pot and lid are a matt grey and there is a very clinical white label with the product name in white on a red background. However this suggests it is more of a medical product than a trendy consumer product.

Sudocrem has been a trusted nappy cream for as long as I can remember and its old-fashioned packaging reinforces its image as a tried-and-tested product.

The lid lifts off and you scoop the cream out with a clean finger and apply to sore or irritated bottoms. Th product is a very thick white barrier cream.

At one time, a barrier cream such as Sudocrem was applied at every nappy change to prevent nappy rash but my midwife advised me that this is no longer recommended. This is because nowadays nappies are much more absorbent and effective at locking away urine so bottoms are far less likely to get irritated, but the barrier cream actually acts as a barrier to prevent the urine from being absorbed properly therefore making baby more uncomfortable. I followed this advice and saved the Sudocrem for only when my son's bottom looks red and irritated.

I was advised by mummy friends to buy some Metanium as this is apparenly more effective than Sudocrem but thankfully my son has never really suffered with bad nappy rash and any little bits he has had have been cleared up from one nappy change to the next by simply applying a layer of Sudocrem. In my opinion the results are amazing. One friend actually gave me an unopened tube of Metanium to try and I have never yet had to open it - I have found Sudocrem to be perfectly sufficient. We had one episode where his bottom was extremely raw and I thought it was time to open the Metanium but even then the Sudocrem worked quickly and efficiently and there was no need.

It does not have a strong smell and its scent is extremely bland and inoffensive. I am not even a tenth of the way through my first pot of this and my son is fast approaching his first birthday, so it lasts forever.

It is a fantastic product and every mummy should have a pot!

Summary: The old ones are the best!
