Sudocrem Antiseptic Healing Cream
Advantages: Heals fast and on a number of difficult to heal conditions.
Disadvantages: Can cause stubborn stains on materials.
Sudocrem is a product I've had in the household for years. When I was a teen my parents got some for me when I was suffering from a spot of eczema and I have used it ever since on any cuts or abrasions. I'm writing this review now because I recently had to start using Sudocrem regularly on my dog as she has a fairly bad case of eczema on one leg. We went through eight months of steroid treatment and allergy tests before finding out that Sudocrem was the only thing that would keep it under control! [Please consult your veterinarian before using the cream on your pet!]
The product is sold as an 'Antiseptic Healing Cream' and suggested uses as printed on the label of the tub include using this for ailments like nappy rash, eczema, surface wounds, sunburn and acne. The product comes in a grey plastic tub and it looks very medicinal. The label on the tub is printed with much helpful information including directions for use, active ingredients list, possible side effects warnings, contact information and expiry date of the cream.
The tub I have is sized at 125g and it's rather large. I would say you only need this size if you need to use the cream on a regular basis as I do. I have purchased this in a smaller variety too. The tub is fitted with a lid which is a rubbery plastic and which has a lip on it with which you can prize the lid up. This is easy to do.
The cream looks like a solid balm and is white and thick. It also has a reasonably strong medicinal smell that makes me think of hospital wards and bandages. To use the cream you simply apply a thin layer over whatever ailment you wish to treat. When you put a finger into the cream you have to wiggle it about a bit as the cream is so dense and thick. You need to slightly melt the cream to enable it to stick to your finger.
Since the cream is so thick it doesn't spread very far over the skin so I've found I often have to return to the tub to get some more cream. When you apply the cream it feels very greasy and balm-like. The cream does not sink into skin but rather more seems to form a barrier over the skin. When I first used this I was concerned that it would smother the skin and not give wet wounds the chance to dry up and heal. However, even on things like wet eczema this cream manages to be effective.
The cream doesn't have any soothing qualities but it is fast working. I recently had a cut on my index finger which was in a painful position and I wanted it to heal fast. Using Sudocrem helped heal the area quickly and avoid any infection at a place that was exposed to lots of germs. In the past I have also used the cream on mild sunburn, scratches, spots and bites.
As I mentioned I'm currently using this regularly on my dog's leg. She had a really bad case of eczema caused by an allergy. Whilst changing her to a low allergen diet to control her condition this cream has been the only product (amongst dozens of other specialist dog creams and powders) that has been effective in healing her sores and stopping her itching. However, please consult your vet if you plan to use this product in this way as it can cause diarrhoea and zinc oxide poisoning if ingested in huge amounts.
Another slight issue with the cream is that because it's quite sticky if it gets on clothes it can cause hard to remove stains.
Ultimately Sudocrem is a product that I think every household should have in store, ready to use on all sorts of painful and irritating conditions. It's literally a miracle cream as far as I'm concerned!
Summary: Miracle Cream that every home should have!
