My Westie dog suffered terribly from eczema. The vet gave him so many steroid injections that the back of his neck is like leather. Many mornings I came down to find he had scratched or bitten himself until he bled.
A day trip to Bournemouth turned out to be a revelation for him. We got into conversation with an elderly couple, who recommended changing our dog's food to a premium dry lamb and rice diet, and bathing him in Tea Tree shampoo.
The results were near immediate, his skin improved within a few days and he has stayed nearly itch free since that meeting almost four years ago.
The couple explained that the dogs skin condition was most likely brought on by an allergy to flea bites, and the tea tree oil had a dual purpose in soothing his irritated skin and repelling the fleas.
Tea Tree shampoo is available from many pet stores, however that can be costly so I make up my own by diluting the essential oil in a mild pet shampoo. I have even used "human" tea tree shampoo on him (which is priced much cheaper) and that worked too.

I also use 'human'tea tree shampoo on my 2 yorkshire terriers - one of them used to have very dry skin - all gone now - and so far neither have had fleas! - with them being long haired - it also keeps them looking shiny (and they smell better too !!!)
