Advantages: Not as expensives as brand names

Disadvantages: Not any more effective than paracetamol

I think everyone, when they get cough, cold, sore throat just heads for the chemist to pick up some of the many pills that claim to be a quick fix to it all when in actual fact there is no such thing. I'm one of the people guilty of this. I do however, draw the line at paying over £3 for a box of what are really no more than mild painkillers.

Unfortunately, I've got a stinking cold and sore throat at the moment and came across Tesco's own 'Max Strength Cold and Flu' Capsules. At £1.50, they are middle of the road price wise for these type of items. However anything with 'max strength' on the box seems to add a few pence.

In the box you get 16 yellow and red capsules in 2 blister packs. The box states they give relief from headache, sore throats, fever and aches and pains, that they are easy to swallow and non drowsy. Ingredients stated are Paracetamol, Caffeine and Phenylephrine. Now I've heard of paracetmol, obviously and some of these products I'm sure are just this with prettier boxes and bigger price tags. Caffiene I'm also familiar with too. So would you be just as better off with a couple of 20p paracetmol and a cup of coffee? Possibly. That addition of 'Phenylephrine' (Wikipedia informs me is a decongestant) doesn't really make these pills any kind of wonder drug.

I've been taking these for 3 days now, and now I've run out I'm just going to use normal paracetamol to fight the aches and pains. the virus itself as I well know needs to sort itself out. They don't make anymore difference and don't waste another 50p on a colourful box.

Sucked in to a hope of a miracle sure for a virus, Tesco has not come up with it. I'd stick to bog standard paracetamol, hot ribena and some TLC.

Summary: Don't buy these. you'll still feel bad, but will just be poorer too!

Great title! I've tried these too and found them poor. I use night nurse capsules instead. These are really effective at reducing the symptoms (but do make you drowsy).

I am secretary to the deputy chief pharmacist of a hospital trust and he says don't bother with these - the advice below is right
