Tesco Value Facial Tissues
Advantages: Cheap, relatively soft
Let's be brutally honest...tissues are not an interesting subject. I would take a stab in the dark that you are about as interested in reading about tissues as I am in writing about them...in other words not very. Since I'm being honest though, I'm at one of those times in my life where I have 101 things that need to be paid for and the fact that Dooyoo have gone mad and deemed these to be a Level 1 subject, is my one and only motivation for writing this review. There's enthusiasm for you. As Tesco, manufacturer of these tissues say themselves though, 'Every little helps'.
I have been suffering with a cold on and off since before Christmas. Every time I manage to get rid of it, it comes back - the hazard of working in a 24 hour office, where we are required to share desks with other shift patterns no doubt. This has meant tissues have been an essential product for me over the past few months. Whilst I buy pocket packs of Olbas oil tissues for my handbag, when I'm at home I usually just go for the cheapest option, which is why on my last visit to Tesco I picked up a box of their value tissues.
Housed in a plain white box with a red stripe, these do not exactly jump out at you on the shelves. Perhaps though, that's the idea, as presumably Tesco would be much happier if we were all buying the expensive brands. Of course plain packaging helps in keeping the costs down too. Personally I don't really care what the box looks like, I know you can get some beautifully designed tissue boxes these days to match in with your décor, but whilst I do think that's a lovely idea, the reality is that I'm too stingy to pay for them!
The barcode and all other info such as the address and other necessary info is actually on the piece of cardboard that you tear out and throw away (the packaging has changed slightly from the pic above). This leaves you with a plain looking box, however if you do pick it up and look on the base you will see the Tesco Value logo. I like that it's only on the base and not the sides as it's more discreet and makes me feel less of a cheapskate! The opening of the box is oval shaped and I found it easy to press along the perforated line and remove the cardboard insert without tearing the box as I often tend to do.
The tissues are easy to remove from the box, however I have found that often two will come out of the box at once. The tissues are 2 ply, which means that each tissue is made from two sheets of tissue paper. They don't have any fancy features such as oils or balms, but then I guess that wouldn't be expected from a value product.
They are very lightweight and I can tell that the thickness doesn't compare to more expensive brands such as Kleenex. I have to say though, despite not being as thick as other brands, they are fairly soft. They're not at all scratchy like the ones we have at work, and don't feel harsh against my skin. I have in the past had redness under my nose from using paper towels as tissues, but I've experienced no irritation with these.
I mentioned that you often get more than one tissue coming out of the box at once. You may think that's a bad thing as it's wasteful, but given that these are thinner, I do often find that I need to use two at once, where one would normally suffice with pricier brands. I don't want to go into depth in terms of snot and all that (surely some stuff should be left to the imagination!), but let's just say that when my cold was at its worst I was going through these extremely quickly!
The tissues really are cheap, with a box of 150 costing just 36p. When compared to Tesco's own brand tissues which are £1.25 for 90 and Kleenex at £1.75 this is extremely good value - even if you are using two at a time!
Overall, I am pleased with these tissues and would have no qualms about using them again. They are certainly not as thick or as good quality as the more expensive brands, but they do the job and they're great value.
Summary: One for the bargain hunters!
