Advantages: Ease of use, long shelf life, few people allergic to it
Disadvantages: Can be strong if used neat
Tea tree oil is another staple in my medicine cabinet and has been for years. We use it a lot in Australia and my aunt and uncle had a tea tree oil field on their farm. My cousins and I sued to play in it and if we got scratches etc, would rub one of the spindly leaves on it to help heal it and keep it clean.
There are many different brands of tea tree oil however I tend to use the Thursday Plantation brand as this is one I remember growing up.
tea Tree Oil can be used for many things. Ideally it is used as a anti-bacterial like disinfectant however being natural; germs cannot become as easily immune to this as other similar items.
Use it neat on blemishes, sores, cuts and even cold sores. Yes, I use it on cold sores as it helps to dry it out and aids healing of the infection. Whether it is linked or not, it appears to reduce the scarring of cold sores as well.
It can also add in the removal of warts - being an antiseptic they apparently get killed off by the tea tree oil, it takes a while - much longer than surgical removal - however as a kid and constantly getting little warts, I do find this helped and wasn't nearly as frightening as getting them burnt off. I used it on a warty mole recently and it did seem to start the process off before I got it removed through surgery. But it did recede in size.
You can dilute it as a bathing tool for babies and helps with skin conditions such as eczema. I also use it in my dog's shampoo as it helps her skin and also wards off fleas and mites for a period.
Personally I love the smell as it reminds me of eucalyptus and other similar things. Some people find it a little overpowering however not as much as something like Olbas oil.
A small bottle will last you a reasonably long time as you do only need a dab here and there. An excellent all round antiseptic.
Summary: Love this product - keep it as an emergency all-rounder

- 22/05/09 It's certainly very versatile stuff. I use tea tree cream on my dog if she gets any cuts on her paws too. xx |
