Advantages: Many uses, 100% natural

Disadvantages: None

Latin name: Melaleuca alternifolia. It is derived from the leaves of this plant by steam distilation. Originating from Australia, the Aboriginies were the first to make use of this plant for its medicinal purposes.

In appearance it is a clear/pale yellow colour with a very distinctive, fresh aroma. The oil contains both antiseptic and antifungal properties, which make it a very versatile tool. An essential item in my medicine cabinet!

As with all aromatherapy oils, to test your skins reaction to it, you should apply only a small amount, or even dilute it (applicable only to Tea Tree and Lavender oil). A couple of drops tend to do the trick, especially for common aliments, including spots, cuts. blisters, and insect bites, to name a few. I tend to use it neat using some wool, so I am able to properly cleanse an area.

It can be used as a mouthwash - if you have ulcers you can use it as a mouth wash, by adding a few drops to water, or apply directly. Gargled to combat a sore throat - 4 drops to a cup of water up to three times a day. It even helps with toothache - one of those bug bears that can really make you feel rough - a drop of the oil applied to teeth and gums works wonders.

For a massage you can mix 3-8 drops of tea tree oil with a carrier oil (i find almond oil works brilliantly, in small amounts it gets absorbed into my skin quickly, so I am able to get on with my day).

It can be used as an addition to cleaning solution - to help repel insects (especially in this time of year - handy to know)

It comes in various forms - form the liquid in a bottle 10ml (which should be used sparingly, lotions, shampoos to soap. The majoirty of chemists stock it by their skin cleansing products, in varying forms.

You can buy it in many £1 stores, for as little as just that. Well worth keeping it in stock!

If you are have a medical condition, suffer from skin allergies or you are using homeopathic remedies you should consult your doctor before using the product in its purest form.

Summary: Very handy addition to anyone's medicine cabinet!
