Advantages: A natural analgesic
Disadvantages: The smell is awful lol, but its a small price to pay
Tiger Balm was the brainchild of a Chinese Herbalist many years ago. The balm was originally formulated for the Chinese Emperors to use. After the herbalists death one of his sons travelled the East accompanied by a Tiger ( A symbol of strength and vitality in the East) selling the balm wherever he could.
In the 1920`s his two sons established a company base in Singapore to manufacture the Tiger Balm and the product is widely used throughout the World nowadays.
Tiger Balm is used for the relief of muscular aches and pains, I find it especially useful after I have done a hard days gardening.
The Balm can be bought in two strengths, the Red balm which is extra strong and the White Balm which is regular strength, you can also buy a Tiger liniment oil to use for massage purposes.
The Balm contains Camphor which is a really pungent smell, many of you will associate the smell with Moth balls, but the Camphor helps to `numb` the affected area so aids relief. The next ingredient is Cajaput Oil, a very similar smell to Camphor and this oil produces warmth in the affected area, Clove Bud Oil comes next which also acts as an anaesthetic, then Mint Oil and Menthol assist the other ingredients with the anaesthetising process.
I buy the white balm, its strong enough and certainly smelly enough for me! I prefer the smell of Camphor to the smell of cloves, the clove oil smells awful! But the balm works so I can forgive the smell.
I usually have to apply it to the calves of my legs, a tiny amount of the thick balm goes a very long way. When you initially apply it to the skin it feels cold but within a very short time you notice that your skin becomes really hot! this is the balm getting to work. Just massage it in and then leave it to act. As soon as you have used the balm then wash your hands, it is so potent that you really wouldn't want to get it anywhere near your eyes.
It goes without saying that the balm can only be used externally.
Tiger Balm is a widely known herbal medication, it can be used for neck or back pain, rheumatism and arthritis, muscular or joint pain and if you have been feeling stressed and you muscles have tightened up them you really could benefit form using the balm. You can use it on weary feet too, just a tiny bit massaged in well helps relieve sore or tired feet.
Tiger Balm is a natural product, just a blend of valuable oils. No animal ingredients are contained in the balm. It is a completely natural analgesic. The balm can be useful if you have a cold or chesty cough, use it in the same way as Vick rub, but use the milder white balm .
We have masses of chemically produced alternatives on the market but I much prefer to use a natural product and the Chinese are Masters when it comes to herbal remedies.
I buy my Tiger Balm for Boots the chemist it costs me just over £4 for a 19 g jar, but the small jar lasts me months.
Summary: A natural analgesic for aching muscles or sore joints.
