Advantages: Natural ingredients, soothes aches and pains.

Disadvantages: Be careful where you put it.

I first discovered Tiger Balm when I had a headache at work and a friend passed it over the desks. She said that it would definitely work and I was in no mood to turn it away.

It worked and I've been hooked ever since. I had believed that it was only available in Thailand and when there on holiday I stocked up on several pots. I have since discovered that it is widely available in the UK. In fact you can buy it on the ubiquitous Amazon for around a fiver, it's also available in Boots and SUperdrug.

The pot is a hexagonal shape with a brightly coloured label and a gold screw on top. It's quite small (10g) but it lasts for ages. I think it may come in other sizes.

The balm is a clear, greasy formulation which has quite a distinctive (and not entirely pleasant) smell. It is made of Menthol, Camphor, Cajaput Oil, Clove Oil and Menthol Oil. The smell is a bit like Vicks - the menthol gel you can rub on or inhale.

The balm can be used on muscular aches, headaches and also to relieve insect bites. It feels a bit like Deep Heat when you apply, a warm feeling which dulls the aches and pains. Be careful not to touch your eyes or any other sensitive areas as the heat can feel a bit like burning.

There are two versions of Tiger Balm which have differing strengths. I have only used the clear (original) version but there is also a red version which has Cinnamon.

To use, you just apply to the affected area and rub gently. Then wait for it to work it's magic.

I loved this product when I was pregnant and couldn't take pain killers. (Although, as with everything, use in moderation).

Tiger Balm is not tested on animals and contains no animal products. It was first formulated by a Chinese herbalist called Aw Chu Kin.
