Advantages: relieves pain, soothes itching, keeps mossies away
Disadvantages: none
Hi, I have to first clarify some matters regarding Tiger Balm. While the origins of the Tiger Balm formulation may have been discovered in China a long time ago, it was a chinese herbalist Aw Chu Kin, who lived in Rangoon who studied the types of effective remedies and discovered that the blending of various active ingredients - such as camphor, clove and menthol - really brought relief. It was his two sons Aw Boon Par and Aw Boon Haw who saw the potential of the remedy. Aw Boon Haw used his name, meaning Tiger, to name the remedy. As well as being an anglicised version of Haw's name, the tiger, synonymous in the East with strength and vitality, seemed the obvious association for such a pain reliever. Together, the two brothers transformed his home-produced remedy into the world renowned brand it is today. After creating the brand name Tiger Balm they moved from Rangoon to Singapore in 1926. Today, most of the tiger products originate from Singapore. Secondly, I read some posting on how Tiger Balm leaves some yellowish tinge on the skin. My advise is to get a formulation that does not stain. I came across this website that sells a wide variety of Tiger Balm products at quite good prices. I think it's worth taking a look at it. The website I came across is www.sgbox.com

- 02/08/04 Hi,
It's been quite some time since I posted some stuff about Tiger Balm. Well, just some news for people who are looking for Tiger Balm stuff. I found some new Tiger Balm ointment which can be hardly found in websites. I managed to get Tiger mossie repellent and Tiger Soft ointment from this store called SGBOX.com. I dare say that they have probably the widest range of Tiger products available. Here's the link.

- 31/03/04 After putting up my previous review, I received feedback that I should have posted some of my experiences with the product. Ok, here it goes.
I grew up with recurring problems of blocked nose due to sinus. It was especially bad at bedtime and I would always end up breathing from my mouth all the time. Frequent trips to the doctors did not help much and I did not really think I was benefitting much either from the medication that the doctors gave me. One day, I slept over at my grandma's house. As usual, I had the sinus problem and when she saw the discomfort I was in. She reached for this small bottle, scooped a small amount of the contents and applied it on my chest, my back and a little under my nose. Almost immediately, I felt a cool sensation and then slowly, my nasal passage started to clear up. That was almost 30 years ago and I still use this method for my sinus problem.
I would say that I am a die-hard Tiger Balm fan as I have found numerous uses for this balm. I use it to apply to the sides of my temple if I have a migraine. It is an excellent remedy for stopping any kind of itching caused my mosquito bites. I find mosquitoes terribly annoying as it keeps me awake all night. I found that the mosquitoes seem to have an aversion to Tiger Balm . What I do is I apply it to parts of the body, like the legs and arms before I sleep. You don't need alot of it for it to work. After doing so, I get a good night's rest without having to wake up in the middle of the night due to the itching caused by mosquito bites. It is also something that I can't do without when I'm doing some trekking. Believe me, the balm drives the mossies nuts!
I am an avid sports person and I take part in streneous activities like long distance runs and biathlons. Occasionally, I suffer from strained muscles due to inadequate warm ups or over exerting myself. For those who are sports people, here's some useful info. Instead of apply Tiger Balm, you can use something which I find more convenient. Tiger Balm also has a plaster which contains Tiger Balm ingredients. It's called Tiger Medicated Plaster. The muscle rub is also available but I use it on different occasions. For areas like the leg, I use the muscle rub. For areas like the back, shoulder or the thigh, I use the plaster under the clothes that I wear.
Ok, I think I've covered everything that Tiger Balm can do. Hope you will find what I've written useful. If I think of anything else, I will post my comments again.
Oh yes...it might seem crazy but I keep different formulation of Tiger Balm for different purpose. If any one is interested in finding more about their uses, please let me know and I will post my findings.
As for the cost, the UK prices are generally quite high. I suggest that you scout the online stores for a good bargain.
