Advantages: Clears phlegm and congestion
Disadvantages: The taste is disgusting!
Who knows where my cough came from. I woke up one morning after feeling completly fine for the rest of the week and noticed I had a slight tickle at the back of my throat. A few more days in and i was still coughing and as it was getting no better I decided to pop along to my local pharmacy to see if there was anything that could help shift my now annoying cough, after being recomended the Beechams Venos chesty cough I was soon home and taking my required dosage, the end of my cough perhaps.....no I was to get worse before I got better!!
I am not one who likes taking tablets and it has been over 6 years since I last paid a trip to my doctors so I thought with my over the counter cough mixture I would be feeling fine in no time. The bottle itself is £100 ml in size and from Lloyds pharmacy it cost me £3.02, certainly not cheap. The bottle is packaged in a blue and orange cardboard box which once opened contains a clear glass bottle where you can see the brown mixture inside. To open the bottle you need to un-scew the top and away you go.
The dosage is adults and children under 12 to take 2 teaspoonfuls every 2-3 hours or children under the age of 3 to take one teaspoonful every 2-3 hours. With any medicine you should always read the information provided and like I had to consult your doctor if symptoms persist.
The syrup itself is not the most pleasant thing I have ever tasted, I guessed it would not be fantastic but it really is discusting! The medicine is thick in texture and very sweet and sticky. I got it on my hands when pouring and it was a nightmare to get off my kitchen surface! It contains treacle and sugar as well as liquid glucose and menthol.
The medicine does not leave you feeling drowsy which meant I could drive as well as carry on functioning at work, all beit al little tired as I had been up all night coughing.
I have to say that the medicine did not work for me. I am not sure if its because my symptoms were to strong or that I was jus not suited to it. I showed little sign of any relief from coughing. One thing that I found the medicine did help with was clearing my phlegm and loosening the congestion that I was experiencing. I was couging and my chest was not becoming so tight to breathe.
It is difficult to say if I would recomend this product as just because it did not personally work for me is not to say it is a bad product that wouldn't work on others. If i was unfortunate to suffer from another nasty cough I would give the Venos another go!
Summary: A small relief from a nasty cough.

- 27/07/09 Apparently, studies have shown that most cough medicines are no better than a placebo! Codeine will calm a cough, but it is, of course, a narcotic, and can cause constipation - sometimes a case of the cure being worse than the disease! |
