Advantages: Does the job pretty well

Disadvantages: Looks, tastes and smells awful

When I was a child I can always remember being given Venos Cough Medicines if I had a persistent cough. They do cough medicines for tickly, dry and chesty coughs and are a tried and tested brand for me. Now I have my own family I make sure I have a bottle in for such occassions. I am not the type of person who shoves medicine down my childrens throats willy-nilly, however sometimes these things can need a bit of help to disappear completely so thats when I start my children on the Venos!

Venos medicines are manufactured by Beechams, who are a large manufacturer in the medicine world. They are available over the counter from most pharmacies.

A 100ml bottle of medicine will cost you around £2.15. The medicines are packaged within a clear glass bottle with white metal screw-cap. Each medicine comes with a white plastic measuring spoon and instruction sheet.

The three types of medicine available are also packaged in different colours for you to differenciate between them. The chesty one is orange, tickly is yellow and dry is blue.

The chesty one is the worst tasting in my opinion. The tickly cough mixture has a honey/lemon taste which my family actually enjoy having. The smell alone of the chesty cough medicine is enough to put you off. It is extremely strong. It is a mixture of aniseed and liquorise in my opinion. The medicine itself is like syrup. It is thick and 'gloopy'. The colour is a vile dark brown colour too, so if you want a medicine to look appealing to your children in order for them to consume it easier, you may want to avoid this one.

What I tend to do is give my child the recommended amount of this medicine, followed by a quick swig of another drink to take the taste away. This seems to do the trick and makes him far more likely to consume the medicine in the first place. The taste itself is again really strong and not particularly nice either. However this taste doesn't linger in the mouth and does disappear quite quickly if you do the above.

These medicines are non-drowsy and have added menthol. They are suitable for children over 3 years old. You are only recommended to give these medicines to children under 3 on the advise of the medical profession.

Recommended consumption is as follows:
Adults & children over 12 - 1 x 10ml dose every 2/3 hours
Children aged 3-12 - 1 x 5ml dose every 2/3 hours.

If symptoms persist for more than a week or so after using this medicine you are recommended to visit your doctor.

Overall, although out of the 3 medicines in this group, this is by far the worse smelling and tasting, it does seem to do the trick. Not the easiest of medicines to get down the throat for the above reasons, but you do get a warming effect on your throat almost instantly. For me, it doesn't seem to cure the cough completely on its own - it just eases the cough and makes it less severe until it disappears.

It soothes the throat well and makes it far less sore and the cough itself seems less severe after a few spoonfuls of this stuff. You can also feel it almost settle on your chest too, the area its supposed to be working to help and seems to ease breathlessness from a chesty cough too. It is very sticky and can get messy so try not to spill any. For the price you pay its worth keeping a bottle in and if you get a cough i'd hope it was a tickly one as this medicine looks and tastes far better than this one.

Venos medicines have been around for a long time and as said previously are a tried and tested brand which I trust completely. It has never left me with any side effects such as drowsiness so I have no qualms in giving this to my children. A good aid to help the symptoms of a cough if you can put up with the horrendous taste!

Summary: My trusted cough medicine
