Advantages: Does clear a blocked nose

Disadvantages: But only for a short while

I have had a cold now for almost 5 days and it is driving me mad, I cannot wait to feel better. I have gone past the stage of constantly sneezing and now I just cannot breathe, my nose is so blocked and I am starting to talk funny. When I get a cold I tend not to take anything for it, maybe paracetemol but nothing ever seems to work. One product we do always have in our house is Vicks Sinex Nasel Spray. I am unsure if it really works but keep using it anyway.

Vicks Sinex is a decondestant nasel spray that relieves a blocked nose caused by a cold, hayfever or sinusitis. You simply put 1-2 sprays per nostril every 6-8 hours, and breathe in deeply.

It says to use, invert once then hold the bottle upright, insert into the nostril and give the bottle a quick sharp squeeze, then take a deep breathe. I don't like actually doing this and find it gives you a quite unpleasant feeling in your nose.

I think the nasel spray is effective to begin with and you find your blocked nose turns into a runny nose, and for a short while you can breathe again. However after maybe say an hour or two you find your nose is again blocked and once again you can't breathe. I find that when I've got a cold I aways seem to be using it, probably every couple of hours, it certainly does not work for 6 to 8 hours.

The Sinex Spray is suitable to be used by adults and children over 6 and there are no known side effects with this product. It says you should not use for longer than 7 days and that if you are still unwell you should consult a doctor.

As with all things medical, the nasel spray is quite expensive. I paid £3.50 for a 20ml bottle. It is only a small bottle but will probably see you through a couple of colds.

The last time I bought some the best before date was only a couple of months away, so make sure this is something you check, as you want to be able to re-use if you get poorly again. This might have been because I bought it from the corner shop, it had probably already been there for years.

Overall I think this product is ok, it does work in the short term but you find yourself abusing it and spraying more often than is advised, but I think when you are ill you will try anything if it makes you feel better and Vicks Sinex does provide relief for a blocked nose.

Summary: Ok

Best thing to use is a tiny drop of tea tree oil on a small piece of cotton wool and place it in the opening of one nostril and breathe through it. The wool needs to be small enough not to block the nostril. Try it
